Teamspeak
Hi all,

I know a lot of people using this now but I wonder how it works. What equipment would I need to start using it? I guess I need a headset or something? Is this right?
A mic is the only thing you NEED, to start using TS (apart from the software itself).

Dan,
Quote from Gentlefoot :I'll be getting one at lunchtime. Where do I get the software then Dan?

btw - off topic I know but any news on thre accident?

Here matey > http://www.goteamspeak.com/

Dan,

Cheers mate.

I guess the woman's insurers and the garage insurers are deealing with it between themselves. I suppose once they've got your account of the accident they don't need much else from you.
Police and the garage have all details, witnesses etc, just a waiting game for now I guess.

Good luck getting TS up and running

Dan,
Do people use teamspeak on public open servers much?
No, I have only really used it in organised events, lots of BS spouted in public TS servers IMO .

Dan,
Just downloaded it and installed it but whenever I click on a server it says no reply. Do I need to open up any ports or anything?

Just found this

"To get your server working behind a router/firewall you only need to forward/open port 8767 UDP (not TCP)."
go to www.clownpaint.com/gaming (this is our Clownpaints site). There, on the left, is a permanent TS server which was working yesterday (in fact it's been working for about a year, apart from one day last week when he forgot to update a URL).

I don't have to open ports on my router, but I'm not running a server - maybe TS uses PNP? But it should just be a case of clicking join on clownpaint.

Yep - exact same messsage connecting to that one. Using a Cisco PIX 506 so maybe that's the problem. Just tried opening up the UDP ports but didn't seem to make any difference.

Oh well, I'll try on my machine at home. Far simpler.

ATC have one that works, ask franky or another ATC pawn about it

I use www.teamspeak.org software, works fine for me...

I'm running the TS2 client software which is all you need to connect. I don't normally have any problems going through a firewall/router, AFAIK you only usually need to fool with port settings if you want to run a TS server.

Typically you need the I.P/password of the server to connect, unless like clownpaint.com there's a nice handy "click this" link.

Yep that's what I'm using - I definately found servers in the list showing with people connected but I still couldn't connect. It's not that I'm not finding a server - it's that I cannot connect to a server I know is valid. I have tried several random choices from the list, also both test servers for Teamspeak 2 and clownpaints. Exact same message every time.

Here's the message:

[16:23:57] No reply from server
Maybe the server is offline
or maybe teamspeak is not running on it

The IP of clownpaints server is pinging fine.

I strongly recommend a headset rather than a separate microphone, for use with Teamspeak. If you have a desktop microphone, it's likely to sound tinny and/or echoey to the people you're talking to and you'll find yourself repeating yourself frequently.

If you're going to use Teamspeak for any extended period of time, I recommend the Plantronics Audio90 headset. It's larger than your average walkman-style headset, but it's extraordinarily well designed, sturdy in the main part, and VERY light on the head.. no pressure on your ears.. you can wear them all day and forget that they're on. In fact the biggest problem with wearing this headset is that you DO forget you're wearing them, and get half strangled when you walk away from your desk.

They're pretty good value, at between £15 (Ebay) and £24 (PCWorld), with a really good frequency response range, quite well suited for general audio/music too.
The teamspeak website support page said to look at a log file. This was the contents:

18-08-06 16:28:05,1528,ERROR,ProcedureInfo,Client Open,Exception: Timeout on recv LoginStep2 wait

It would be nice to know what login step 2 is.

The site says no firewall or router changes are required for the client. I know I'm using the correct IP and port.

Can't believe I've reached a dead end with this already.

Try the quick connect option and enter the I.P of a T.S server [you might need to P.M clownpaint and ask him for it unless you can find one posted in a thread here somewhere]. That way you're going straight to the server and you can be sure there's not some sort of central browser getting between you and a connection.

I must admit I haven't a clue how or even if T.S servers are listed centrally, I've always used the quick connect to enter an I.P and connect straight to a server.
Its worked fine here at home. I think I know what I did wrong actually. Don't think I'd actually committed the changes to the firewall before. Doh!
Whats the best way to listen to TeamSpeak and LFS at the same time?

Do you have all sounds through headset or use speakers for LFS sounds and headset for voice?

if using just headset ,do the sounds mix together or are the LFS sounds muted when talking /listening or use separate left/right channels

Better with single headphone if listening with speakers for LFS sounds ?
I tend to use the main speakers for LFS, and the headset for TS sounds. That way it's more real, in so much that the microphone picks up the engine noise, making speaking difficult on long straights. So I have to do what F1 drivers do and wait for slow corners.

The downside is people can hear my wheel whirring, and know I've made a bit of a cock-up

I know you use a USB headset, is it possible to do that without one? I have 3 programmable audio jacks on my motherboard, and I can set two to be audio out, but I still doubt it'd work.
I would recommend getting a second sound card for your headset. it just makes getting the right sound balance so much easier(i have game sounds on the audigy 2 and Headset/Mic on second cheap card) . I picked up a crappy old soundblaster 128 for £1 on e-bay which does the job perfectly.

Second sound card would be the only way I think. I just have everything coming out of the speakers or headphones if using them. Can be hard to hear people over the engine noise sometimes, but you can adjust the TS volume to make it easier to hear. Sometimes you get noobs using stereo mix in ts so you get an ear full of engine noise and tyre screeching.

You remembered specifics about my audio setup?!?!?! Feck!

Erm, I don't know. It depends how clever your motherboard/soundcard is I suppose. If you plug in your headphones/set, can you make windows sound still come out of the speakers, or does it all come out of the earpieces? If you have that control (i.e. the headphone socket has a different output to the normal speakers that you can choose) then you can, but maybe not if not...

Hehe, I have a good memory for stuff like that.

But anyway, all I can do is just make the same sound come out both my speakers and my headset, so I doubt I'll be able to do it. I don't see an option to choose what sound goes where. If I was going to do anything, I'd probably just get a USB headset. Thanks anyway, though.
