VERL 2023 - Round 1
V8 Racing League 2023
Round 1

Sunday,10th September
17:00 UTC / 19:00 CET / 20:00 EET

The 2nd season with a new car is set to start on the coming sunday and the selected track is the longest in VERL history - the 8.8 kilometer long Aston Grand Prix configuration has something from everything as it features long straights, fast sweeping turns, quick bends and slow hairpins. Since the car has been changed compared to last year, setups most likelly have to be adapted or even created from scratch. Less power and a bit more aerodynamics effect should help to handle the car, however the 600 horsepower will make the racing at limit still very challenging.

Currently signups list is quite short and does not include any of previous champions,so let's hope people will stop playing the waiting game and sign up at first chance - this is a series where everyone can prove their skills driving a very challenging car.

Round info:

PENALTIES:

[MRc] Zesty - receives 10 seconds penalty added to his finish time for pit exit line violation.

The 9th season started with a bang at the Aston - this round counted a total of 16 competitors, which is actually a new attendance record of the turbo era,as last season's highest attendance was only 14. However one of the drivers did not start,3 others retired before completing points scoring distance, leaving the finishers count to 12 - all of them finished full race distance as the long lap helped to avoid being lapped. Without a single previous series champion being signed up,the race for high positions was a mix of league's experienced drivers and rookies with experience elsewhere.

2 rookies took top 2 positions - the winner of RandomCar inaugural race celebrated victory also in the season opener of VERL 2023. The bulgarian RD2 started the race from outside of front row, took over race lead before entering turn 1 and led the whole 23 laps race, leaving a safe 11 seconds gap over competition in the finish. M.Túlio qualified just 5th,but during race found way pass plenty of competitors to finish 2nd,setting a new lap record in the final lap of the race to score the bonus point for fastest lap. Last season's 3rd best racer Thehemuli continued his series journey with a 3rd place finish in 1st race of his 3rd season. The series 1st leader this season was Zesty, who scored 1st point in qualifying by setting best laptime in session, but his race was plagued by multiple incidents which pushed him down the order to finish 6th.

Standings order after 1st race of course is same as finishing order of the race,RD2 currently leads standings by 2 points over M.Túlio,Thehemuli is 3rd with 6 points gap to leader. Since the series is led by 2 rookies, the standings of the rookie competition is also similar, just 3rd position is different - Sixmoon is there with 8 points gap to leader.

2nd best team of last year takes the lead in teams championship after the 1st round - Zafiralis has a very slim lead of 1 point over Master Race car,Roda Presa is 3rd with 9 points gap, just like the defending champions RGA. Brazil has been present in series in many seasons, but without particular success - their best result was 7th in 2019,when they scored 25 points, this season the south americans started with huge step up by scoring 30 points in 1st round alone and leads the nations standings by 9 points over defending champions Finland. Bulgaria is 3rd another one point back due sole effort of the race winner.

If round 1 track was new to series,it was still well known track for LFS racers in general, however something brand new is set up for 2nd round of the season - the 3.2 kilometer FoRGE Viaduct 8 is set up in our newest environment Layout Square. The track consists of 2 straights, each a kilometer long and series of quite slow corners, forcing the drivers hold back the full throttle usage. Finding the most speed through slow sections without sacrificing top speed in straights should be the key for success in round 2.
