Physx cards.
Had a quick search couldn't find anything about this.

I'm thinking of doing a Dell once I got some cash coming in and they could supply a physx card. Is it worth it? Are next Gen games really making the most of specific cards like this?

It's and extra 120 quid or something like that. Is it worth lumping it in or wait for a few months and get one if I think I need one.

Have I just answered my own question.

Damnit.

Anyway, any thoughts appreaciated. Especially about the Dell way of doing things. It just seems easy for me. And the name don't seem to be all that bd.

I believe that PFX (Physics effects) cards won't make it into the mainstream market. The major GFX manufacturers announced interest in making physics calculations possible on their boards. Until the hardware manufacturers have widely adapted standards and interfaces (like DirectX or OpenGL in the GFX-world) it isn't worth to buy any PFX card.
Current solutions are also very much limited. They only support one physics model that is supplied by the hardware manufacturer. All other calculations are alien to the hardware and are not supported. Thus there is very few software that supports PFX cards. Actually I'm not even aware of a single one, but google might come up with some.

well seeing as nVidia and ATi are looking at having 3 video card systems, and one becomes a dedicated Physics card, so these systems could be incompatible and alot cheaper in future, so my advice is to wait
Currently I think there is a handful of games that supports PhysX, and the way things are going, all support will be dropped for the easier option of using a GPU to take over physics calculations.

Though if you MUST buy one, buy the ASUS one from OCuk, they made them 128MB, but BFG got all prissy about it, so everyone had to make 64MB versions, but ASUS just relabled them 64MB (though still 128MB) and because of a nice deal with the chaps at OCuk, they are the only supplier that only has the 128MB versions of it

They're labelled as 128mb but are actually 256mb

am i the only person that remembers the Meqon physics demo? it ran VERY well, and didnt need anything special, but of course, game developers have their own reason for not using it... (i dont mean LFS, i mean in stuff like FPS', as i can only dream of a rocket hitting a wall and breaking the bricks apart instead of putting the same uniform hole in it

D'oh, that was it. I know it was labelled something different to what it really was, but was too lazy to check.

nope, i got into FPS as deep as UT-BC and BF1942 demo (offline of course!)

You should. It does what you said you want. The test level is fun too. You can blow it up to the boreders of the map, and the glass house is fun to throw C4 on <3

But yeah, you can pretty much build your own tunnels in the game. I used to take huge shortcuts all the time. Then go the long way and kill more people.

hmmmm, ill look into finding a demo then!
Link.

Never played the demo, but as long as it's an outside/cave mission you get to blow crap up, indoors the walls don't give, only in caves

But it was years ahead of it's time and had to work around the hardware then.

is redfaction 2 the one i want or just redfaction?
From memory Red Faction 2 was PS2 only. I can't remember ever seeing it for PC. But if it is, grab it anyway

[edit: Heh, just googled it. Never came out on PC when I was in school, I remember being pissed that my mates could get it for the PS2 and I couldn't for PC. Never played it though, but I think one of my mates said you can't blow up as much random shit]

Quote from Leifde :They're labelled as 128mb but are actually 256mb

Every PhysX card currently on the market (from ASUS, BFG, ELSA) has a 128MB GDDR3 memory configuration.

Every card has been labeled 128MB, but www.overclockers.co.uk had a deal with ASUS so they get 256MB versions, which were all branded 128MB because BFG had a hissy fit that ASUS were making better cards. Though it would appear that that deal has ended as they no longer carry ASUS PhsyX cards.
Physx cards r pointless and r a waste of money. Only a few games run them such as GRAW and they infact cause a drop in FPS because the graphics card then has to render more things.

heh, RF.. used to play that a bit.. the clan i was in was in the top 3 in the world... :P
Bit OT..but RF is my fav 1st person shooter game. My fav PS2 games for multiplayer as well. The 1st was great for shortcutting by destroying stuff, if you wanted to. Still can in the 2nd one, but to a lesser degree. Its used for hidden secrets quite a bit.

Btw the 2nd one was released for PC, I completed it on PC long before I played it on the PS2.
