AWS 2024 - Round 4
All-wheel-drive Winter Series 2024
Round 4

Sunday,4th February
18:30 UTC / 19:30 CET / 20:30 EET

2nd oval round of the season and the 2nd fastest round, but overall it marks the middle of the 7 round season. Rockingham 150 last year was thriller where the result was decided in last lap between drivers running in different situations during the race. One thing is clear - as always on higher speed ovals there is no replacement for teamwork, however the gain of successful teamwork is not as huge as known from Kyoto oval. The midengined coupe Fraud Wheeler is equipped with R4 slick tyres, which do not provide a lot of grip, however are much more durable during the high loads experienced in oval - that relieves drivers from need to take care about tyre temperatures.

As always in the oval rounds we will use hotlap qualifying to ensure solo effort being decisive in order to take high grid positions. The running order of qualifying will be decided from Drivers Championship standings - lowest placed drivers will start qualifying while standings leader will take his run last. Everyone will have to run 3 laps - outlap and 2 timed hotlaps, after which driver should spectate, only fastest lap counts of course. 2nd timed lap is optional - theoretically cars are faster in 2nd lap,but in case of a mistake, driver can spectate without finishing 2nd timed lap.

As usual,to avoid many questions,Race Green Events' statement about bumpdrafting:
"With closed wheels cars it is not forbidden, but in case of any reported incidents it will be treated as intentional contact,so everyone has to make sure that he knows what he is doing!"

Current series leader has a healthy advantage over competition, however constanty doing way above 200 km/h during the next race one mistake can have much higher impact on result,so the situation in standings can change quicky. But the 2019 AWS champion has also one important minor award under his belt - in same year he also secured the oval trophy (winning also Winter 200),meaning he's deffinitelly no beginner in this kind of racing.

2nd oval round of the season was run in the Rockingham with Fraud Wheeler - a car that originally has a rally background. But already last year we used it for oval racing and it worked out well,so the return of Rockingham 150 was a logical decision. This year however the race for win was over pretty quickly - the leading duo dropped everyone behind and were pulling away while the rest had it's own struggles to settle in. This time there was no 3-way close finish for race win,but quite similar situation evolved in race for 4th place.

The standings leader Sobis got a support for this race - another seasoned oval racer and his help directly led to 2nd win in row. Both lithuanians worked well together to extend the gap over competition to 13 seconds, but with 5 laps left Sobis lost control over the car and barely rescued the 2nd position. On the final lap he was even gifted the race win as his collegue waited for him to let by - a rather questionable move not in the spirit of racing, however it does not breach any rules. Trespasser is scored as 2nd place finisher despite being fastest in qualifying (1st ever AWS pole position),leading almost all laps and being in secure lead when starting last lap - he settled in voluntary for runner up position on his 1st AWS race this season. Best of the rest was Thehemuli, who was out of reach from any chase attempts from behind, but his tries to follow the leaders failed early.

2nd win in row advanced Sobis into 19 points lead in the standings after 4 of 7 rounds - that is 3 points less than maximum possible score from a single round. The closest 2 rivals for championship are Thehemuli and Lorenzo, seperated only with tiebreaker of best finishing positions (two 3rd place finishes versus two 4th place finishes). A total of 18 drivers are still eligible for main title, however only top5 are considered as at least realistic candidates. This round was also counted into Oval trophy standings, also here Sobis is the leader - he has 9 points gap over Thehemuli, meaning a top3 finish in season finale at Kyoto would grant him this award for the 2nd time.

Best rookie in this round was the standings leader RD2,who now doubled his lead over S.Martin to 6 points,Stiefla is 3rd with 12 points distance to leader.

With 4th and 5th place finishes RGA scored most points between teams and with it increased their lead in teams standings - the defending champions now are 19 points ahead of WCL while LLM is 3rd,represented only by drivers standings leader. Lithuania scored all possible 39 points from this round, but the gap to defending champions and standings leaders Finland is still 34 points - next round will show if there is some battle left for the nations cup. Single driver nation Italy is 3rd with 72 points gap to lead.

Round 5 is set to support roads of Westhill racing circuit - something we have used plenty of times for racing too. This year the RB4 will run in the Road Course 2,which was used already in 2018 edition of this round. 22 laps around the 3.8km temporary circuit will be a good test for all the racers and this will be the round which will either sharpen up the race for champions title or settle down.
