AWS 2024 - Round 7
All-wheel-drive Winter Series 2024
Round 7

Sunday,17th March
18:30 UTC / 19:30 CET / 20:30 EET

The fast race around Kyoto Ring's oval with FXR has been held in every single season of AWS and additionally it has been season finale in 6 out of 12 previous seasons,so why not also this year? As always this round is all about teamwork - alone even the fastest racer will be slower than good teamwork, however great teamwork is what wins races. 4 previous winners of this round are eligible to compete also this season - maybe one of them can become the first 2-time winner of Winter 200?

As always in the oval rounds we will use hotlap qualifying to ensure solo effort being decisive in order to take high grid positions. The running order of qualifying will be decided from Drivers Championship standings - lowest placed drivers will start qualifying while standings leader will take his run last. Everyone will have to run 3 laps - outlap and 2 timed hotlaps, after which driver should spectate, only fastest lap counts of course. 2nd timed lap is optional - theoretically cars are faster in 2nd lap,but in case of a mistake, driver can spectate without finishing 2nd timed lap.

As usual,to avoid many questions,Race Green Events' statement about bumpdrafting:
"With closed wheels cars it is not forbidden, but in case of any reported incidents it will be treated as intentional contact,so everyone has to make sure that he knows what he is doing!"

23 drivers have qualified for season finale by scoring at least 1 point in AWS drivers championship standings,4 of them are still eligible for champion title, however even the closest rival has a lot of disadvantage to overcome - 10 points gap with 22 points available is everything else than easy task. But unpredictibility of contact based oval racing can still throw things around. Besides drivers championship, also rookie of the year, oval trophy winner and teams champions have to be decided in this race, allthough the last one is almost decided.

Season finale in Kyoto was not well attended - with 9 drivers it was the least attended round of the 2024 AWS season, weirdly only a late joiner in qualifying avoided the "half distance for half points" rule to kick in,which is activated with 8 or less drivers in qualifying. So the full 200km race was run and as always racers experienced unexpected turns of events while the finish was quite a controversy.

It's not the first time something like this happened in LFS racing history,so it bound to be repeated also in AWS some day - the day was this sunday, when 2 drivers crossed the finish line within LFS's smallest timing resolution of 100th of a second. As you can see in unofficial results,by LFS the declared winner is one driver, however the other one crossed the visual finish line first. It was decided to put this visual finish line as priority and overturn race results in favour of driver who crossed the visible finish line texture first.

Both lithuanians Sobis and Trespasser started from outside of rows 1 and 2,jumped into race lead already in 1st lap, broke the draft to 2 closest followers, which started their common journey towards victory lane. They constantly increased their gap over closest followers, finishing 14 seconds ahead of them. At the final lap, where all friends turn into rivals,Sobis passed his countryman entering last turn and tried to escape over the finish straight - despite LFS's results, the photofinish picture confirms he succeeded to keep the lead over finish line. That's is Sobis' 3rd race win this season and 5th overall in the league and 30th top5 finish. Ironically Trespasser gifted his countryman a race win in previous oval round in Rockingham, now he tried to win himself but failed and had to settle for another 2nd place finish. League creator Rony scored pole position in Winter 200 for 2nd year in row and 4th time in total, but did not led a single lap in the race, being just in the 1st chase group - he beat his teammate over the finish line to finish 3rd,scoring his 1st podium finish of the season.

Full season recap will be posted within 2 weeks.
