I can only speak for me, but if I'd see it is a good program, I would certainly throw some cash out for it afterwards. (Well maybe not too much since I'm a poor student, but still ^^).
When will The Industry accept that the more they try to prevent theft, the more they turn their customers down?
I would maybe buy game X if the demo (if there actually IS a demo) would not install some funny hacks on my system to prevent me from copying it which actually causes the game to not run at all?
I see a potential problem with trying to make the game have "awesome" graphics. Most games that everyone drools over graphics look very unrealistic. The shadows, lighting, reflections, etc are always way overdone, and really don't look anything like real life. That's one of the reasons im quite happy with the LFS graphics, they are more "conservative" and look a bit more like real life, rather than a videogame.
That said, graphics arent important to me at all. In the heat of a great battle you just don't notice the graphics that much. The gameplay is the reason i play games (imagine that). I don't think better reflections or shadows are going to immerse me in the game any more. I'd much rather see pit crews, marshalls, etc before that.
That wouldn´t affect the internetconnetcion speed at all, as not good quality images are transfered but information about the "movement" of the cars. So, with better quality of the game=same connectionspeed.
lol, you're funny
Nobody is forcing you to buy any of this stuff. You get it because you want something out of it, either entertainment, communications, or because you want to make money with it. If you want better stuff in the future (and not too distance future) you have to pay for it. It is the nature of the beast that older technology does not play well with newer technology. You can't make everything backwards compatible.
I don't know enough about DRM to have much of an opinion on it yet other to say that I don't like the idea of software telling me what I can and cannot do with my computer. If I want something, I buy it. I don't share it and I don't give it to other people. Having said that, you don't own the software or the music you buy. You own a license to use the product. I can understand wanting to protect your products from piracy, especially if you sell to a relatively small community. LFS does a good job of this. However, I cannot support invasive systems that won't allow me to use my computer the way I want to use it.
LFS Graphics are good now. However, it is not perfect. You can still tell you are looking at computer generated graphics. Some day, it might get hard to distinguish from computer generated graphics and real life. I don't want more eye candy now at the expense of other features. However, especially for a racing game, there are some things that just make it better. Much, much higher resolutions would help. Being able to see things more clearly, at a much longer distance would help. You can't really do that now with what we have technically, not even with DX10. Continual improvement is important, but each step needs to be carefully evaluated based on the goals for what you want to accomplish.
Yes the graphics need to be improved but not at the costs that come with DX10, that being Vista. DX9 can create stuning visuals AND even MS have not been able to demo games on Vista yet. Their last demo, when someone got to the machine and closed the game down, proved to be running on XP.
Becky: You say you have not had issues with DRM and iTunes yet... I hope you have never bought any music from iTunes. The moment you no longer have any Apple kit you will loose the ability to play it. Yes you could use iTunes on your PC but how does that help in your car etc.
MS made a slip and one of their people stated that HD content will not play on 32bit Vista systems. They are now backtracking but that has made it worse. They now say its up to the publisher of the HD content if they will let you play HD content if they feel your machine is secure and will be able to see your machine configuration (hardware and software) to determine this.
So people like the RIAA and MPA etc WILL have access to look at your machine and they will decide if they will allow you to play the HD content you have paid for.
The same companies that file lawsuits against their customer base, or young children and even dead people or who install rootkits on your machine via black hat techniques and then claim they havn't until it is proved without doubt will have ALL THE CONTROL over your music and films.
BTW, the RIAA let the family of the dead father they claimed downloaded songs have 60 days to get over it before they continued the court case.
DO NOT BUY VISTA, if you help stop this move to complete DRM control and removal of your rights to mach backups etc then you only have YOURSELF to blame when you look back in 5 years time and say... oh bugger!
Imagine if cars started looking like this ingame... (see attachment)
(sorry, I posted a while back saying how I thought graphics weren't important; I actually get so caught up in the graphics side of things that it's healthy for me to play devils advocate once in a while to balance myself out. Anyways..
+1 for graphical enhancements in LFS! :headbang:
PS,
So true. I was playing Oblivion the other night and the visuals were stunning. They really are that good. And it's Dx9. Not even shader model 3.0 (which everyone assumed it would be)..
Whilst I agree with the sentiment, you should be aware that the 'right to make a backup' is a local law (common throughout the commonwealth) and does not apply in all countries. Neither does it grant you the ability to make backups - only that you are allowed too.
I tried something similar in the past and it didn't work for me :/.
Yup iTunes has DRM. I don't buy music online, so I dont care.
I bought Oblivion and even on my new PC I was not that impressed with it's graphics. At close range it is stunning, but the mid range and long range detail is abysmal, and the LOD pop is terrible. Close up though yes it is gorgeous, but they needed to make the midrange better. I could handle a poor long range view, but the mid distance was too heavily compromised for what was up close.
I'm running a few mods which introduce a bit more detail into the distant terrain texture. I agree it looks pretty shoddy without. I've played Oblivion quite a bit over the last few months, always tweaking as I go. Maybe I'm just choosing to look where I want to now..
vista and directx10 have nothing to do (amost) with graphic improvement they are only a way to force you into drm...
stunning graphics is possible with dx9, but i say OpenGL is and always will be as good as directx...at least! it's not that dx10 are the only choice...
actually we have little choice for other reasons: microsoft with his bully partners forces companies to buy ms os by making deals with hardware resellers so that if a company buy a workstation with preinstalled ms os it will cost less that the same workstation without any os preinstallation, this is of course absurd...this is the vicious circle on which ms lives...
Latest Flight Sim X in action.. It's a great sim- although boring for some (including me ) . Been going for 25 years now. I remember playing this on the C64, watching my friend fly under a bridge and getting all excited. Fsim X will become a DX10 game sometime in the future (as a free upgrade), but these screens are all DX9. As you can see, there's life in the old horse yet...
Sorry for bumping an oldish thread, im just here to share my views on the whole thing.
The idea of DX10, well screw that, a silly idea so drop it altogether As for DX9, yes thats a good start!
Most of you people claim graphics arent that important when playing, but believe me they are aslong as they're done tastefuly. Take GT4 for example, i love it, because of its massive car list but also because of its graphics. A bit of bling will cover any imperfections and will draw all the little moths to the flame that is LFS.
Its a bit of a half way house, LFS is no longer a small project that 3 people can handle, its exploded and it requires a bigger team (IMO) and a community driven game as much as its a good thing, it could easly become a negative thing. Dont restrict it, let it grow.
I'm also a playability first kinda person. However, I think LFS looks pretty good as is. I run GTA: San Andreas on this PC, and I turn the graphics settings down to 640x480x32, with no AA. First of all, it doesn't have THAT much of a negative impact on graphic quality--but the framerate is silky smooth, with none of the hiccups and jerks that accompanied the PS2 version (and my PC has more processing power than what they consider the "recommended" system requirements).
If I want to upgrade to Vista and DX10, I'll need $300 for the OS, and another $300 for a decent graphics card. I'll wait.
There's a new version of Vista available for public download- RC1. I read some reviews and so far it's been recieved very well, many of the problems of the earlier betas have been corrected. Performance in games has also been drastically improved, in many cases upto xp level now (insert sarcastic wow here).
