Dedicated host on DOS/FreeDOS?
Hi!

I'm interested if there's a way to run the dedicated lfs host on DOS or FreeDOS (the full version with NET) oses?

Thanks.

only if you can get a windows emulator
No, it's not possible. And please don't ask Scawen to port the dedi host to MS DOS. You could have asked him this question 15 years ago, but not now. illepall
If you've really got that low a spec machine, and really don't want to pop windows on it, the dedicated server "runs" (with a bug or two) under wine on linux / free/netbsd.
To be honest I see no reason why such a combo would work better on a low spec PC. I ran the dedi on a Pentium 90 Mhz with 64 MB RAM and Windows 98 installed - it worked without any flaws. I doubt that you can manage something like this with Linux and an emulator.
The problem is that I have to buy another windows...

I wasnt make a dig at the performance of low-spec'ed machines. But since the fact of using a free (as in beer) operating system was the key factor, I was trying to bring up reasonable alternatives. You're right that it may not be the best option in terms of processing requirements. But it is cost-less.

I never used Linux, so i would appreciate if someone could tell which distribution should i use... wine? fedora?

Wine - the Windows emulator, i prefer Ubuntu, but SUSE comes with Wine by default, so it's probably the easiest (well i got a PC n00b running Linux and his winows apps through Wine fine!)
The issue being if you dont need a GUI, then installing a full distro is a hell of a lot of wasted diskspace and processing time - unfortunately doing a "server" or minimal install is often very scary for people new to linux. I'll see if I can bung together a tutorial on it some time this weekend
