Rear-view Suggestion
There have been several overtaking/visibility suggestions, but here is mine:

So, yesterday I'm on AC Club in the FOX still in heavy traffic as we are approaching the S/F line on lap 1. I'm on the right side of the track with a car coming up on my right side that I can see approaching in my mirror. I do a quick right-look, see nobody, and so move right to protect the inside (we are past the S/F at this point). Turns out, he did have overlap on me and by the time I move over he was pretty much right up beside me (per viewing the replay). As such, I foced him into the grass (for which he repaid me by sending me spinning). The entier time, I can see his car in my side view mirrors, but didn't know he was that close.

Suggestion: As a car overlaps another car, the overtaking car starts to move through the side view mirror. So, as nose overlaps, the nose is no longer visible in the side view mirror. As half the car overlaps, then only the back half of teh car is visible in the side view mirror. Etc.

The problem here, was that the right-look did not show me his car when he was only partially overlapping me and his entire car was in my side-view mirror. As such, I nearly crashed him out and he did crash me out.

Just a thought.

side mirrors are just the rear-view mirror cut in half

ps - try pitspotter, it might help!

a little mod that says "right side", "left side", "clear" etc to tell you if you have overlap, very useful for cars you don't want to look at, but want to be told when theres overlap
I have a suggestion, how about when you look right/left LFS points your head directly at the nearest car in that direction, and if there is none, does as it does now.
How about implementing warnings such as "Car on the left" "..right" etc.(like pitspotter) in the LFS companion? i have problems spotting and trying not to crash another racer too..most of the time when i look left/right i lose concentration or steering involuntary and do somthing wrong when i come back to front view. or in corners...its imposible for me to watch if a car enterd on my side in the corner or breaked before while cornering......so i dont know if i can exit on the outside or remain on the inside.....

I actually like that idea quite a bit, as that's what you'd be looking at in RL +1 from me

I only have eight hands and 65 hours in the day !

I think you should start this on a new thread in ideas.

Great idea and solves so many issues. So if you look left and there is a car anywhere on your left your centre of focus is that car and the same with look right.

((((( beh, anyway that tracking side view thing its quite intresting! good luck !:P
Another possibility is to have a "radar" display. Something like the minimap, but instead of showing the position of cars around the track, it should show the immediate vicinity of your own car.

The display could be shown next to the (virtual) inside mirror.
The thing I like about the mirror solution, is it fits the intended realism (though Becky's solution might as well). IRL, as a car moves up alongside you begin to lose view of portions of the car as it increasingly overlaps. Also, this would be a feature that would be a distinguishing characteristic of LFS. Competative advantage.
