Becoming a professional helmet painter
Guys I am looking into something for my career but I dunno where to start, so I am looking for some clue here, I hope some of you might have a few leads for me to continue my research.

I study product design in central saint martins, however I realize that my real interest doesn't seem to lie within product design - I like painting and working on design itself, but brand building and market positioning is just not for me. I have a passion for cars though (and how doesn't on this forum ), and it seems I am quite sensitive about merging 2D graphics and a 3D form, which leads me to my current direction.

My strength is that I can draw and it comes quite naturally, I can think 3D and in the communication side I can present ideas clearly and articulate vague concepts, furthermore I like talking with delightful people, especially on the subject on cars, however diverse culture and lifestyle topics are also my favorite.

My weakness though is that I seldom have the chance to pickup a air brush, and obviously there are many technics I have to pickup in order to become professional.(i've seen a demo helmet from Bell with all the latest chroming and computer graphics technology, and it is quite a piece of work)

So I wonder can I build my career base on the skills I process now. (research, design conceptuation, and presentation) and build up my craft during my working experience? Or most graphic workshops prefer guys who already know how to paint and then train up their other design skills?

I really think this is a thing I could do at least for the next decade of my life, and even if I don't make a fortune out of it, I would still be very proud to have learnt such a skill. I would like to expand my knowledge onto car livery design as well, but that's of a greater scale and probably with less degree of freedom, since helmet design is much more personal and is less constricted by sponsor's requirement.

Any input would be hugely appreciated, thanks.
Give a helmet painter a ring, and ask his advice. It's more than likely a dieing art, so he might like someone keen to teach his skills to.

And if you want you can do my helmet for practice
I have been blessed from above regarding what you seek.

Almost two years ago, I joined a newly started, danish racingteam becoming their webmaster, graphics guru, etc. After the first year, they thought that I had skills, and let me design their new logo and the liveries for their 2006 cars ( BMW 320i E46 WTCC-spec ). Again, they were more than happy with my work, so this summer I got to design a helmet for one of the drivers. The helmet was delivered from the painter last Thursday, and again, the driver was happy about it.

So now people ask me if I could do a design for them.. It was my goal to become "famous" and to earn money designing racecars, and now it's almost reached.

Attached is pictures of the helmet I designed.. The driver loves the green color, and he wanted something red to reflect the danish flag ( red and white ). The logo is my work too

See the BMW with my design on www.klostermann-racing.dk ( danish language - pictures are in "Nyheder"- submenu "Billeder".

BTW: Feel free to contact me if you want advice or anything
