What is a Womble?
My German ex once asked me "What is a womble?" I had real trouble explaining to her what a womble is. Any one think up a good definition?

Also, my next door neighbour asked me how many womble names I could remember (wombles made a cameo appearance on BBCs Rogue Traders last night).

Here are the ones I could remember. I think these are right.

Tomsk
Tobermory
Orinoco
Uncle Bulgaria

But which wombles did I forget??

Wellington and Madame Cholet (spelling Kev, pfff) are the two main ones you'd forgotten.

I think there is a wiki for Wombles too, which might help you explain what you're talking about to people. *searches for wikilink* http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Womble

Underground, Overground, Wombling free,
The Wombles of Wimbledon Common are we.
Making good use of the things that we find,
Things that the everyday folks leave behind.

Edit: And Bungo - I can't believe I forgot Bungo, he was my favourite!

Edit2: Wiki Trivia - Wandsworth council had to put signs on the common advising parents not to allow children to litter the common. Children had been collecting rubbish to leave on the common in the hope that a Womble would appear to make use of the "things that the everyday folks leave behind."

Edit3: Mods, please add the errant 'M' to the thread title, as I think a Womble has run off with it!

A google search explains it quite well. The first page that comes up after a german google querry is a german fansite, which might be of assistance in the explanation process.

lol, well I was deprived of my tv rights I was a brat the best part of my youth ...It just came to me "The Wind In The Willows" is what I was thinking of
Wind in the Willows was also awesome, but not quite as awesome as the Wombles. I'll watch that episode when I'm not at work I think...

@Greboth - I'll send you a PM tomorrow with the lyrics in it again, so that you spend all of tomorrow humming it. In fact, I'm going to dig up an MP3 of the theme and send it to you. Muhahahahahahaha

Never got in to Wind in the Willows so much. The Clangers and Bagpuss (heeve,heeve,heeve....we will fix it, we will fix it ) were more my kinda thing when I was really young. Dangermouse, now that was good though.
Agreed. I was also a Thundercats fan. Snarf snarf...

A sad revelation: first LP I ever bought was the original Mike Batt Wombles LP. I hate to remember the year, maybe '73, '74? Thank god for punk.
