Using A Joystick
Please help... im using a joystick and every set up i have used is about 2.5 seconds off the pace... the car slides so much and understeers really bad.... are there any people with setups that are for joystick use?

Please help many thanks....
Joysticks are useless really. You can't drive properly with joysticks. You'd be better off buying a wheel. If not then use mouse or keyboard.
I use a joystick most of the time and I do fine. :P There isn't a specific set for a joystick considering you have the same amount of control with a joystick as a wheel. I'd recommend setting your x-axis to steer, back on the y axis to brake, and the throttle for well, throttle.

The main issue you're probably having is you're trying to steer full lock most of the time, LFS is set by default to a 1:1 steering ratio. Meaning if you tilt the joystick half way you're at half lock, so you really have to control your steering input. AKA, would you take a normal corner in your car irl with your steering wheel turned all the way over?
i drive with a joystick, its easy when you get it set right
I used to drive with a Joystick. I use a gamepad now (Logitech Dual Action USB, USB standing for Utter Sh*t B...bit?). The main thing to remember with joysticks is their range of motion. Holding it right at the top gives a large range but you have to support your whole arms weight which makes you clumsy when driving (it did me :shrug. Holding nearer the base means you can rest your arm and use the wrist for moving the stick (much more precise). Another thing to remember is dont just go 'hmm i wanna go fast. full throttle. oo corner. full brake, full lock.' coz then the next thing you say is 'oo grass, oo wall'
I also used to drive with 'stick. Drove about half years and in that time I got pretty good with it. It was easy to drive tight and turny combos, since the steering precision was higher and counter-steering was much faster to do. Joystick requires some adjusting to settings. Mainly about the turning since it has to be somewhat "numb" to compensate.

The throttle-brake was with the y-axis and therefore it simulated "right foot driving". Braking while turning was difficult.

Then I bought a wheel. My laptimes sunk. Although at the same time the current physicpatch came, so I blame that too About three months went from the switch before I started to make better times than with joystick. The most hardest part in the transition at first was the FF.

I don't think I could go back to 'stick anymore, but I rather back to stick than to mouse.

You drive with what you got. Be a 'sticker and be a proud one! Wheel ain't necessary better. It's all subjective. Use what you can to enjoy lfs!
