Finland passing the law on net censorship
Gotta love my f****** country. This is absurd and disturbing.

Finnish article: http://www.tietokone.fi/uutta/ ... ews_id=28783&tyyppi=1

The police can now issue a confidential list of 'dangerous' sites to the ISPs. What sites are included, you ask? Of course the thousands and thousands of public child pornography sites the net is full of. That's all good to me, by the way...

(ignore the fact no officials have bothered to actually report evidence of thousands and thousands of public child pornography sites)

...but do you honestly believe they will stop there?

"Vapaa maa" they said, we'll see about that one in a couple of years.
"Lottovoitto syntyä suomeen."
Wait wait.. you mean, they've red flagged child porn sites so Finnish ISP's won't be able to access them, but they haven't reported them so the sites get removed completely?

Yup.
Once again I wonder what kind of moths we have in power over here. Why can't they report and close the sites with help of foreign polices and such? Those same old moms with their l33t computer knowledge have almost done the same thing like with the new copyright law where it's illegal to copy bought music to your iPod but not so illegal to steal it from the Internet. Kind of scary law actually if that makes censorship legal in all areas, the purpose is good, but the system could be abused to wrong purposes.

edit. Followed few links from that first link, and read some comments from people. And got freking scared! Now when this power is given they could do almost anything, and if you are against it you can be labeled as a pedofile....ffs with these elections and politics.

Basic idea is good, to protect children, everyhing else went completely wrong as usual.

Well, senile, old and stupid people that are looking good income are usually those who are getting into politics and average person votes by look or if politician has some background of sport/acting etc.

At least 80% of Finnish people are complete idiots when it comes to elections, common good, etc.

And came to think about it, as even my IQ (which is really not too high) is in top 20%, how stupid those at low 20% have to be? That scares as hell.

I won't spend rest of my life in here, because this is sinking ship, companies are leaving, those that have higher education are leaving, there is no point staying.

Yeah, I'm going to get the education and scram. Don't know where, it seems that the world is just totally messed up nowdays. Maybe...ehh, to Canada?

edit. lål for deggis
A bit offtopic, but they calculated the costs of a computer-based database which would make easier to manage the absences from the parliament. 500 000 euros. :faint2:
I have a dream to move out from this hellhole in the next 5-10 years too. The best place for me would be New Zealand. Got some relatives/family there, love the scenery, warm weather, cheap japanese cars (), english language..

NZ is definately where I'm aiming at.
Quote from TyresHot :glad to hear

Just to clear out that you don't get completely wrong idea... the politician in the pic is the Deputy Prime Minister of Finland and in a animated parody tv series he is called "don" because of the questionable political connections between trade union central organisation and the social democratic party.

That is cheap, Ulosottovirasto (sorry I'm missing translation of that) did get their new system, took at least 4 years and more than one million euros, that is software only to handle customers, to know what they need to pay and such things and I heard that there is still errors in software last week.

I know few companies that did go bankrupt because software error, customers got mixed, money was negative instead of positive etc. Then all work is many months from schedule because of fixing these errors, some are wating money and such, it is really something that should not happen, but this is Finland so anything is possible.

The message is clear.

Download all the porn you can before its removed from the net!
Nice, I hope our goverment won't do the same
I don't want to download porn, but I'd like to be able to protest against violation of freedom of speech happening on government level without getting labeled as a pedofile/terrorist/criminal in Finland.

As far as I can see, your goverment has done better job, they look how they mess things here and avoid doing same mistakes ;D
OK, so they block all of FINLANDS ISP's from accessing these sites, but are they gonna stop all global proxy sites as well?
This is a good idea to protect kiddies, but it is useless, (not to mention a total wasate of resources) if this action is only taken unilaterally.
What is needed is a global shutdown of ALL sites that are in any way associated with child porn!

(but leave ME the right to look at mature boobies if I so desire! )

Of course they don't block proxies, so it is really useless what they do, but they have then easy way to block some other content for example racing simulators if they would like to, it is very easy that things slip out from hand here.

I don't think that blocking all those sites would help much to real problem, as more likely it is chat thingy where from abuse will start and here is needed some invention to avoid such things happening, can't think what it may be, but maybe someone has better brains.

Sure it would be great to get rid of all those sites, but unfortainly it might be impossible and always there should be some real benefit of such actions as blocking some ip-addresses by ISP, now there is not much.

Road to school / bus stop is one big risk (I think this is not so in every country), then there is meetings arranged via chat boards (child - pedofile who pretends to be a child), then insest/familyfriends, I think, I can't think how those internet sites could posses greater risk compared to these others.

i think completely as what you think.
Uh how do you know it's just child porn sites on the list? What if it also includes legitimate news sites? Blogs from dissenters? See, a whole lot of things can be defined by the gov't as "objectional" or "dangerous".

You can't and this is why we are worried.
Ok, now we have a kiddy porn problem on the net. They say:

"Wait, we know! Give us the POWER to block "undesirable" sites and help fight the problem!"

Next thing we know, they get the right to ban ANY site they deem undesirable. Remember the "you're either with us or against us" speach from you know who?

As the wise ones among humanity say: "Power corrupts, and absolute power corupts ABSOLUTELY". Since I don't see how general human nature would change within our lifetimes, these words will always hold true (within our lifetimes at least).

You're frightening the life outta me! My wife and I are going to retire to Finland in the not too distant future! All this talk about sinking ships! I wouldn't be surprised if most people in most countries feel the same. I know I do about Britain. You in Finland have something which is, as far as I'm concerned, precious. Space! Whenever I go to Finland I'm struck by how the pace of life is more sensible than the rat-race that is England. You're not all on top of each other. Treasure that.
I suppose though, that the grass is always greener etc. Having looked at your 'grass' many times I've not seen anything, apart from talvi, to change my view.

New Zealand is nice, but I bet it'd bore your socks off unless you're into sheep!
I suppose if you are going to retire this is absolutely fantastic place to be, nice and safe. But as I should work before I can retire I'm mostly worried if I will have a job in the next 6-8 years when I have the education to something. There just seems to be too much highly educated people and not enough work to do, which isn't right is it. Talking about sinking ship might be a bit exagerrated, at the moment the Finnish economy is doing better than ever before. Of course the media somehow, maybe accidentally, paints a grim image how workers are getting kicked out and companies sold to foreign investors, and how everything is getting to worst. Another problem I see in the future are the old, because the huge generation(s) born after the wars are now retiring and there isn't enough tax payers to pay their pensions, so it's likely that the taxes which are already very high, will get even higher and the pensions will maybe drop. I don't accuse anyone, it's not their fault the age distribution is like this. No country will ever be perfect, there is always something which someone doesn't feel right and moans about, blaming and badmouthing governments is a tradition everywhere, isn't it? Maybe we should turn Finland to the Florida of Europe...in any case, Welcome Mr&Mrs Doorman!
