Ok, first of all, don't laugh, cuz this question may sound weird for you.. but here is my prob.. In server, where are 15+ racers, I have major frame drops, because of sound. When I press SHIFT+N frame rate is good.. So i'd like to ask, if it is possible to disable other vehicles sound, but to keep my car sound?
Rather than do that, I would find out why it is happening.

What soundcard do you have?

Do you have the correct drivers for it?

What is the hardware acceleration set to?
actually I know nothing about sound cards and/or drivers, but maybe this screen may help you?

An easy and extremely cheap way (ie. free) to start would be to try turning down the "Hardware Sound Accelleration Level" slider and see if that helps. I run mine at 1 click down, I think.

Thats ya biggest problem, using a POS onboard soundcard like the C-media POS .

Try turning acceleration down, failing that buy a cheap half decent soundcard.

POS = peace of sh*t? is this what you want to say?
Exactly what I wanted to say
I see.. new sound card needed, any suggestions?

Suggestions for a replacement sound card or to make the best of your current one?

I can't recall but there may be some sound options in LFS, for number of cars to play. Not sure on that one, worth checking though.

If you wan't advice on some new hardware, then it's best to headover to our hardware section where there have been a couple of sound card discussions in the past, do a little searching.

i bought a cheap sound card (Creative SB Live! 5.1) off eBay for £2.25 inc postage - worth every penny!
Now that really is cheap!

Refurb, but works fine - i read on the net you could softmod it to a Audigy 2 ZS (i was.. sceptical), but didnt want to risk f***ing up a tenners worth of card (what they sell for on some sites). I saw some unloved ones on eBay, and bought it, working great. Would recommend it as a cheaper solution than buying a Gameport>USB adaptor!
I turn off my sound too.

I'd be very surprised if that was true considering how long ago the Live! 5.1 came out. Maybe a hack that allows you to use some of the features of the audigy that aren't part of its hardware.

/Edit - Yeah, just checked, allows you to use audigy drivers with the 5.1 but of course the 5.1 doesn't support any of the hardware features of the audigy. EAX 1 4evah.

Thats why the softmod didnt work
Rubbish soundcards aside, it's actually a really good suggestion. In a 20-car grid getting mashed together into something like turn one on SO1, sound robs me of about 10 fps. This would be fine if i dropped from 90 to 80 fps, but it's more like 26 to 16.

Lowering the directsound acceleration helps quite a bit, but maximum number of sounds is a very common setting, and should really be implemented as LFS has a rather advanced sound engine.
Hmm, I have a Soundblaster 5.1 too. I removed it in favor of crappy onboard. All the extra crap it put on and loaded up just bogged it down. Disable all the loaded crap and it just doesn't seem to be any difference to me comparing a card and onboard.
In any case, there will be a difference between having LFS spend time synthesizing the engine notes of 20 cars, to just moving on after having done say, 8?

Could use the LOD distance system which already exists, unless it's some "automatic" DirectX thingie.
