I found it to be a pain in the ass to talk with people with the endless spam of the computer controlled info. With all of the entered/exit pits and vote spam its almost impossible to read anything typed because its pushed off the screen to fast. Would a seperate chat window or area that can be size changed be of intrest to anyone else?

One of the big draws for me with online play is being able to shoot the shit with everyone between races and practicing. Would be nice if it was a better system.

Something like a semi transparent console window similar to the Quake/Halflife would be cool. Instead of pressing H for history you drop down the console and can scroll up and down and check the chat. You could also use this for commands and chat etc.

Also where spectators can chat and the text not be seen by the racers would be good. Not sure abou the seperate window though if all you want to do is mianly chat then there's irc or IM.

Actually, that's not a bad idea.

My original thought was that too much focus on chat would detract from the racing part too much, but now I'm not so sure. Sometimes it's nice to talk between races and you get the occasional useful info in chat.

A seperate virtual box for regular chat and system messages would be useful, if you ask me.

What is it with Americans and swearing recently. The number of people here saying 'shoot the shit' or similar is just shocking, and is a great indicator of the decline of intelligence.

Please, please learn a slightly more gifted way of explaining what you mean, rather than resulting to rude, often offensive, slangy terms.

N2003 had two lines of text across the top of the screen, one for chat (it cycled through one line at a time) and one for player connect/disconnect messages and an (optional) extra line for what your spotter is saying. This system would be fairly useless on LFS because even with less than half the people on the server people tend to send a lot more spam. The one thing I really hate is insim apps that needlessly start sending messages for no reason at all, both server and other client side.

Having a separate line for connects/disconnects/votes could be done in LFS, from U32 onwards options messages (pressing N to open connections list etc) produces the (names only/off/connections etc) text that used to be with everything else in a larger clearer font in the top left, maybe this could be a better system? It would also be nice to be able to block everything apart from votes and admin messages in shift + F, I find most of the pointless LFS messages far more a waste of space than normal chat.

ajp's post just gave me an idea that might work in this respect.

Keep chat where it is now, but add a single line ticker to display system messages in a sort of LCD pager style at the bottom of the screen. It'd be great if it could be added to the dashboard, but I think that might be too small and would probably mess up the skins.

I don't even think about it when someone says it, and shit's almost not a swear word in the US anymore. Cultural differences. Half of my teachers back in high school wouldn't care if anyone said it, but all the other words are still very naughty. EX- South Park episode that abused the fact that the FCC had removed shit from their list of censored words.

We could just have a fully customisable UI, where everything is an object (e.g. window) you can place anywhere you want, control opacity etc etc.

That would be great - so someone could make their own TV type displays and with FRAPS and TeamSpeak make broadcast leagues easier - but no-one will watch the crap ones.

That its a shit idea, because the Ai will wreck everyone, and will be slow, and... its a rubbish idea!

AI should never be involved in driving your car in LFS, NEVER!

Thats reserved for arcade games. Chatting while driving is not neccessary, if you want to do this buy a microphone, plug it in, and talk away over TeamSpeak or similar.

Just giving this idea a *bump* since I really like it. Everyone seems to have ignored it. I think a little one-line ticker at the bottom of the screen with system messages is way less intrusive than what we have now.

Also, don't know if this has been mentioned before, but it would be nice if PgUp/PgDn scrolled the chat history.

What you really want is "channels" you can en/disable, e.g. you could have separate chans for private messages, general, system etc. (/hide) which you could place in various locations on the screen, or disable them at will.
