Why isnt their a login.. rather than unlock???!!!
hi,

Do you not find it really annoying.. everytime you wanna play it on a different computer... you have to unlock it .. using up precious unlocks and then possibly having to delete the files after so peopl cant use it...

..me i find this really annoying...

i mean... when going to friends houses... y instead of taking my game on usb flash over and unlocking and deletting afterwards , canty we have a login so we jus login... any computer... logout... bang... goes back to demo...

it would also help many people who got trouble with their pc... neeed to kep formatting etc... people... and people who move about a lot... often not using same computer etc... there are many reasons...

this is about the only dissapointment i could possibly think of in this game... it is truly great...

but how come?
because thats the way the server works

i dont really know either..

bu i agree, we shouldn't have to worry about "unlocks," just.. login names and passwords
I'm very surprised you don't know the reason. It's quite simple and logical.

Having unlocks instead of a login is a deterrent to people who would want to share accounts.

If we had only logins, then many people could get together and share one account.
It's either unlocks or have your LFS account locked to a single IP.

One of those ideas is workable, the other isn't.
Just playing devil's advocate here, but surely I could unlock the game on as many pc's as I wanted (albeit 2 a month). The deterrent is the fact that no two pc's using the same account can be online at the same time. So I don't see how a login instead of an unlock is bad. If someone wants to share the account, unlocks will undoubtedly slow them down; but is it worth all the problems that come with running out of unlocks (formats, test patches, etc)?

I personally don't have a problem with the current system, I've never run out of unlocks. I've only unlocked the game twice, once at the beginning and once for a test patch. Just wondering why the system is as it is.
Stops people handing out there account information and sharing the account. Even though one user can be online at once it doesn't stop the other user/s from playing offline which would breach most softwares license agreements.

Exactly. It's not like you couldn't do it, but with all the patches and updates, it'd be more frustrating than anything else.
or maybe u can live with the fact that games get hacked and accounts get shared on every account related game.
Id wish there was a login insted of an unlock so I could play s2v in school , on my usb flash drive, insted of demo (if anyone has a solution pm me)
If there is a login, you will need an active internet connection even when playing offilne only. I can see dial-uppers going nuts when they just want to go for some offine practising.

Oh yeah, what if I disconnect after logging on? Allowing this would result in same thing like giving unlimited amount of unlocks - and I dont have to explain what THAT would lead to, do I?
I think it would be okay for LFS to be locked to a single IP. You just would have to specify your current IP on liveforspeed.net, or autodetect it.
Again, dial-uppers - and not only them - have dynamic IPs which made this useless. You will have to set IP every time you want to play. Sorry, but that sounds stupid.
Yeah, I don't like the idea of forcing internet access unnecessarily when the unlocks system seems to work perfectly well.

Huh? What? It doesn't matter. I have never ran LFS offline. I'm always online. Oh, there's other people using dialup other than me?
I used dial up a long time before I finally got ADSL. And I spent more time off than online. I think devs shoudnt "disable" that minority of dial-uppers just because they are a minority.

I would also like to se the unlocks removed. For one simple reason. My little brother playes on my PC, he runs LFS, and gets banned on like 20 servers because he thinks crashing is fun, and I can't lock and unlock LFS 5 times a day

Simple solution, have user profiles in windows and deny your bro's access to lfs.
Seriously guys, reasons why you want login instead of unlocking are completely personal and have nothing to do with current license system at all. So, please, dont request something that needs complete license code rewriting just because few of you find it useful under some uncommon circumstances.

I totally agree.

btw
I usually test every testpatch and never had problems with unlocks and when something went wrong with the patch, Scawen gave another unlock to everyone.

I only once had a problem in the last 3 years with a new installation and a faulty S-ATA HDD and luckily Victor gave me another unlock.

IMO It works perfect the way it is (and protects us from a lot of stupid cracking kids too)

Put it on a flash drive and keep it somewhere safe.
