The online racing simulator
Quote from Shotglass :thats an arguement i never got ... how are simple to understand menues without any fance stuff like videos in the background (gtr2) or spinning cars to toy around with (rf) mor arcady than the menues of other games ?

LFS doesn't say on it anywhere from download to install 'hyper realistic physics' 'professional simulator' 'revolutionary' or any other bullshit like that used to advertise other sims, like I said the menus are simple and don't look technical like other sims and in game when you install it you end up with a big HUD a player/position list/map and loads of colourful names, like was said earlier some parts look like it was designed by a 5 year old. I really wish the coloured names/text where optional and that the chat message noises could be disabled in game rather than by deleting files. There are other things that help make LFS seem arcadey such as the player hack and the colour selectors/silly symbols on numberplates.
And what about getting each month's article done together ? There could be a topic where we could post something we wrote about lfs, or some new mods, which are worth to mention . Then somebody would put it all together, and voila , it is done
Quote from deggis :It's mostly the visual look... It doesn't look like a professional racing sim. Do you think it does, really?

what makes a racing sim look professional in your oppinion ? as ive said nkp does have a look that might have a better first impression on someone looking for a sim but the lack of integration into the engine kills it for me ... and any isi based sim is a tons flashier than lfs

Quote :I bet everyone who first time starts LFS and sees the menus thinks that "this looks like a funny game". You usually see this kind of colourful menus in old small shareware/freeware games. It looks like it's designed with MS Paint by some 5-year-old kid. Menu SYSTEM is superior, I don't know many games where I can change every possible setting while actually driving, but the visual look really needs to be redone. Better background pics, more solid button colours etc. no need for any animated crap. After all you could say who gives a shit about the menus but it's major part of the first impression.

colourful ? have you ever played any of the other sims ? the menus in lfs are much less saturated than on most and overall s2 has that sort of greyish polished look apple and ms are aiming for these days
at least on the main and options menue the race setup screen is a bit more fruity

Quote from ajp71 :LFS doesn't say on it anywhere from download to install 'hyper realistic physics' 'professional simulator' 'revolutionary' or any other bullshit like that used to advertise other sims

which is a good thing right ?

whats so bad about coloured names ? theyve been around ever since qw hit the gaming world and people like it ... its the way the internet works and you got to admit it works for lfs
just by looking at the numbers of players that are online in lfs compared to other sims youll inevitably see that little details like coloured text help to draw the onlinegaming expierenced crowd to lfs instead of other sims which havent learned their lessons on what appeals to gamers

Good example would be Half-Life 2 menus: http://www.mobygames.com/images/i/02/17/325117.jpeg

Even more simplistic than LFS, fast and easy to use system, actually very similar to LFS but with the difference that it also looks stylish and like a professional game.

well... lol here's a little illustration:

Guess which one reflects current LFS menus. Do you now understand now what I mean?

Maybe Scawen simply wants to keep this cute looking colourful menus that reminds about freeware games, LFS being basicly an indie game.

And the current default backgrounds - basicly nice but totally random that has no solid theme. And what is that one real life photo that clearly has some kind of rally Subaru in it, how that relates to LFS?

I hate nkp menu, the whole idea about Windows based menu blows.

the most striking difference to me is that the font is a lot nicer to look at than the lfs one

are you sure your running 0.5v and not 0.3h ?

youre exaggerating quite a bit actually and lfs is nowhere near as fruity as that except the game setup screen which as ive said earlier is fruity and not very pleasing to the eye (to some extent this also aplies to the server list)
all of the other screens have a somewhat nice to look at greyish colour scheme with alpha boxes underneath the text (those should also be added to the rest of the text in the options menu some of it is hard to read)

actually most menus only use colour for two things
1) the ok and cancle buttons on the bottom - more or less taken directly from gpl and it works well
2) the greenish barf coloured text used on the top left and for emphasis - desperately needs to be changed

hl2 also has menus that are similar to windows
Quote from Shotglass :hl2 also has menus that are similar to windows

Similar?! Oh wait, yes, now you made me remember that awful Luna style
Well, saying it's similar to Windows just because of moveable windows with rounded edges and a X on the top right corner seems a bit of a stretch to me, but that's nitpicking.
Quote from Shotglass :the most striking difference to me is that the font is a lot nicer to look at than the lfs one

But I don't see any cute looking rainbow colour themes there.

Quote :youre exaggerating quite a bit actually

That was the point... just changing colours and fonts styles makes a big difference

Quote :hl2 also has menus that are similar to windows

I meant Windows with capital W... windowed menus are ok. In HL2 it's also well integrated, you can change nearly any setting quickly while playing just like in LFS. In nkp it just sucks that you have to quit the game and go back to Windows to change something.
Isn't this discussion a bit pointless? The menus may be the easiest thing to customize due to a color slider for every text and button in the game... If you want it grey/grey/more grey, just edit it...
Quote from Gunn :Well they do pay, not sure how much and I'm not sure how heavily they will edit your work.

Hey Gunn, I haven't seen Free Wheelin' Franklin in years....had all the Freak Brothers when I was younger.
Quote from AndroidXP :Well, saying it's similar to Windows just because of moveable windows with rounded edges and a X on the top right corner seems a bit of a stretch to me, but that's nitpicking.

lets see
- tabs that look and work exactly like in windows
- sliders that look and work exactly like in windows
- drop down menus that work and look like in windows
- ok cancel and apply buttons that look work and are placed exatly like in windows

Quote from deggis :But I don't see any cute looking rainbow colour themes there.

i dont see much of that in lfs either ?

Quote :That was the point... just changing colours and fonts styles makes a big difference

glad we agree for once

ah ok

ill just go ahead and quote myself on this one

i figured the discussion was about first impressions

So you're saying changing some color codes in a default config is so terribly important it should be done immediately? Otherwise I don't see the point in discussing it in a thread about ASS looking for an LfS-writer...

not me ... but deggis and ajp are

Like this was the first time some thread here goes offtopic?

And just to keep it there: I would sure like to have the possibility to edit the gui a little more. afaik, all we can do right now is changing the text- and button-colours. And even though it's not very high on my priorities list, editing the used fonts (type and size) as well as the button shape and size would be really neat. I don't know how easy that would be to implement, though, and if it would take more than, say, a day, I would pass.

Ok so the GUI needs a whole revamp, big deal?

This can be done within a few hours im sure, but does it really matter as of now? What difference will it bring to the current LFS user base? None.

And will it put off any of the new LFS users? No, why should it? They'll probably think what 95% of the rest of us think.

'Its ugly but it works'

I think the whole 'professional' thing is mistaken with the 'corporate' thing.
