Well, i'm trying to download files from an FTP server, but although the server runs great for everyone else, i only get 200 KB/s from it. Its not my PC, i can download at up to 1,100 KB/s (as i've done it!) and while im getting 200 KB/s i can download at up to 500 KB/s, so it isn't that im outta bandwidth. BT really aren't helpful, can anyone tell me if BT do any sort of throttling or shaping which could explain this? If so, is there a way around this?

Are you sure it didn't just drop for a while or something? When i download it will spike to over 3 times the lowest number and slow wind down to that low number, then it repeats.

BT do active speed throttling on P2P networks for many users, but not FTP as far as I know. Just love how any torrent downloads drop to 30Kb/s in the evening..

I know it helps me get around Pipex's capping to get my...erm...Linux ISOs down more quickly

Encrypted my torrent, yes

The obvious statement is that the FTP server is maxing out its upload.
If its not yours, ask the server admin - if you know him / her. If it is yours, then you should beable to answer this question.

I have encryption enabled in Azureus, but it doesn't seem to make a whole load of difference. It'll normally pull the latest Linux distro or game mod at full speed then come 6pm or so and its down to 30kb/s and stays there. Damn BT

How the hell do you people get 30kb/s in the EVENING on BitTorrent? I get that during the DAY on a Tiscali 8Mb connection and about 5kb/s at night!

In BitComet, my download rate is set to unlimited and my upload rate is set to 85% ish of my upstream bandwidth.

its the UKCT server, its sitting in an underused datacentre with a 100 Mb pipe, which is largely unused

I don't know about FTP throttling but I would think more along the lines of General throttling. For the average person this isn't a big deal.

They get a big pipe for cheap from BT. They do a couple downloads, no biggie. After the newness wears off all they do is surf the net which takes very little bandwidth at all. BT saw this that their networks were populated but throughput was slow, so they make a rule that if someone doesn't use X bandwidth per hour they throttle the connection down so the bandwidth can be used for someone elses connection so they can fit even more people onto their boxes =P
