Wouldn't a render of that skin be a total waste of time? Since the skin is so lowres, any render would look crap, right?

Simply increasing the resolution doesn't really change anything, as it won't magically gain quality. Using a 512*512 skin would give the same effect, it would just be magnified in 3DS. You should really create skins in high res, for renders preferably 2048*2048, but at least 1024*1024.
