I used to crack, years ago in my mis-spent youth. I never did 'hacking' like this - but it's a similar principle. I did incalculable millions of pounds of damage to the software industry, and I didn't do it for attention, I did it because I could. Ask a mountaineer why they climb Everest, and they'll say because it is there.
With age came a little maturity (although admittedly not much) and I turned my skills to a slightly more beneficial past time, I started producing instead of stealing. I've never tried to profit from the software I produce, which is probably a bit of guilt creaping in.
To be quite frank, the only way to stop a hacker is to wait for them to grow up.
