I try to be a careful racer, so if I join a race midway through I like to leave the pits without getting in peoples way.

It'd be helpful to know where the leading car is to facilitate this.

I'd rather come onto track knowing the leaders have already passed me, rather than having to get a Blue Flag for them within a few hundred yards and the chance of inadvertantly spoiling a good race. It's mostly a minor irritation, really, as I use tab to shift between cars to see where the leaders are on track, but if the leader is marked, or even everybody with their place numbered on map instead of a little triangle, it'd help many people, not just myself.

Cheers.
Dont think its worth it really. If you join a race mid way through everyone is ahead of you so you will get a blue flag if anyone comes up behind you, no matter if its the leader or not.
if you look at the triangle you can tell who is who, the bright green ones are ahead of you (let them through), the darker orange ones are behind you.
green is you yellow is agead and orange is behind. If you see a blue one dont bother appologizing to it if you hit it, its an ai
yep numbers would be very fine
+1
What about blue lights at the pit exit?
Some people consider the minimap an arcade feature in LFS. In my view it is, but it's essential in the multiplayer environment to avoid "incidents" rather than accidents (inevitable), so I think its worth to improve it ...

Anyway, I would add another colour to indicate people that are overlapped, to differentiate them from people than are fighting a position (just behind you).
For people like me it would be helpful, I'm still slow for the big guys, but quick enough in some cars for a newbie. When somebody in similar level joins in the middle of a race can be fun trying to race, but when they are significant quicker there’s no point to make defensive movements and end in the garage, if you know what I mean.

Summarising:

green: your car
yellow: ahead
orange: behind
red: overlapped or mid-race joiners

red its a suggestion could be violet or cyan,….....
