Hey guys/ gals,

My name is Ryan. i'm currently downloading the demo for LFS. I have a few questions and was wondering if anyone could help me out. Firstly, i've got a 1.7 gig cpu, 32 mb vid card (shoot me, i know), and 512 ram. This game looks pretty kool, and as i am getting back into gaming i was wondering what graphics card people would point me in the direction of. I'm thinking i'll need a complete rebuild, cpu etc, but thats stuff i'm familiar with. (what are the games specs anyhows)

The second question is is my G25 wheel compatible with this game ? I've done searchs on a few of my questions and haven't been able to find precise answers. I'm assuming the wheel and pedals are, but how bout the clutch and h pattern ? (Bloody awesome wheel, works on my nascar games etc but haven't goten full use as the pc is a bit slow)

The third question that i'm asking may create a bit of a situation here, lol, as i've found a few heated threads concerning it, but has there been anymore consideration to real life cars ? Say lisencing is a no go, are there add ons that exist to cater for certain racers needs. In particular i'm a Holden man that lives in Australia, but i'd settle with any other sedans in the works of that have been completed.

Thanks for any replies...

Ryan

You wouldn't get a whole lot of benefit from a new graphics card. LFS tends to be CPU-limited, especially with large grids of cars or AI cars. That said, I have a four year old PC (AMD2600+, 9800Pro, 512Mb RAM) and I don't get drops below 20-ish FPS at the start of a race with a full grid, so you should be able to buy behind-the-curve hardware and get jolly performance.

Yes. We've got lots of G25 users here. The H-shifter will only work in cars that have a H-shifter though. You'll have to go sequential or paddles in the GTR cars and open-wheelers.

We only get real-life cars that the developers make no-cost deals with (currently the MRT5, the RaceAbout, and the BMW Sauber F1.06). It seems the devs are not interested in paying for any licensing of cars or tracks, and they are not currently considering opening up LFS for modding. So: You're not going to see real-life stuff any time soon.

It makes up for it by being a really surprisingly good sim though.
Hi there, welcome to LFS!

Do let us know what you think of the demo. If you're top priorities are physics / vehicle dyanamics & great online play, then you've come to the right place and will not be dissappointed.

If you like what you feel, grab an S2 license and join us for some great fun in the more powerful cars!

Not entirely true. Sequential is only forced when using single seater cars. The GTR class tin-tops allow you to use the H-Pattern shifter. All 3 cars you will find in the demo will allow you to make use of your clutch and shifter.

With my G25, newly acquired TrackIR, and a little modification to my desk to place the shifter lower and closer to me, LFS is an amazing experience. The only other game that even comes close is GTR2, which fully takes advantage of the G25 and TrackIR as well. But LFS provides much more realistic handling IMO. LFS S2 license is well worth the price, and much more is to come with S3.

LFS will probably run OK on your system. I wouldn't add more than 3-4 AIs though, more than that and it'll lower your framerates significantly. Just upgrading your video card won't suffice. Your CPU will still act as a bottleneck. Best bet is to save up a 300-500 bucks and do a whole CPU/Mobo/RAM/Vid upgrade. For now, I don't think it'll be necessary for running LFS, I'd definitely go for a S2 license before you spend the big bucks on a serious upgrade.

Whoops! I stand corrected. I thought the GTRs were sequential.
Cheers Guys
Thanks for the replies,

I have downloaded and played the Demo. If i knew nothing about cars and games physics the experience would've completly blown my mind . But as i expected with the current technologies the way they are etc the game was pretty darn good. Playing with 3 or 4 cars is about the limit of the Pc that i have before it becomes a slug.

I'll definately be upgrading the machine, not just for this game, but for others as well. The creators have done a really good job with this game, and the online aspect is basically the draw card for me.

Once i get the dollars together i'll be upgraded and getting the S2 license. For now i dont think i'd get the best out of the license as a full field of racing is what the hart desires.

Thanks Heaps guys

There are a few tweaks you can make that might help you a little as 32mb for gfx is also a little tight and it will also take some load of the GFX card..

- Drop to 16bit colours (Make sure dither is on.)
- Use half size textures.
- Set you mip bias closer to 0 (higher the neg value the more detail.)

These will help framerates loads if your GFX card is limiting you BUT will have a big negative impact on the visual quality. Just the first alone will make a huge change without too much visual impact, the others have a much bigger effect.

The G25 is a great wheel goes well with LFS.

One tip, while driving hit F9. This will display your tires heat build up, wear and loading in realtime. Lets you see how complex the LFS tire model is

Just make sure your using the latest version (V) as in it (imho) the FFB is even better

Erm.. nothing has changed in the FF since the beginning of S2. You can make the FF smoother by increasing the FF step number in the cfg.ini file though.

that was what i meant, but its much easier to say that than tell him to dive into the cfg.txt file
ajp - the default setting is now 256 rather than 128 for FF steps.

Though there aren't any Holden cars in the games, if you go to the skins sections, some very talented people there have re-created some of the liveries from the V8 series for car models which resemble the V8s.
and if you buy s2 you can sue lfstweak and make any engine modificationg you want EDIT:i know my speeling wrong
