read about that in a huge F1 book i have (its a rundown of every season, with loads of immense pictures). apparently it was immense on the fast circuits, but moss nearly wrecked it at silverstone because he couldnt see where his front wheels were.

the twin towers worked well tbh, its just that the FIA took a hissy about not being able to see properly, even though the drivers said that was bollocks.

the nosecone was legendary though, no idea if it actually worked well or not. apparently not though .
I dint know but what does the 4 front wheels help?

The tyres of an open-wheel car account for a significant part of its total aerodynamic drag (something like 50% depending on the car and tyres). Reducing the frontal area of a tyre means that it creates less aerodynamic drag. So, to produce the same amount of grip as a larger tyre, more small tyres have to be used.
the Tyrell(6 wheels) was a very practical design, it could have done very well. If only they were allowed to continue.
I had heard that despite the fact it has 4 tires in the front it still understeered like hell. I suppose that's partially do to the smaller contact patch, though.

As for the 4WD designs; these were back in the days before power steering. Musta had arms like tree-trunks to drive those beasts!

Wow, I never knew how strange F1 cars were in the 70s and 80s- some truly original designs there.

At least modern F1 cars are stylish...
Stylish? I think not. The new ones would look okay if they had all the winglets and barge boards removed, but even then they are merely ok. The 70s and 80s had some truly nice looking cars, some crazy designs, and some rubbish cars, but every single one had 500% more character than any F1 car of the last decade or so.

Which do you think is cooler? Gilles Villeneuve in a Ferrari 312 or Kimi Raikkonen in a McLaren MP4/22. No contest really...

(Between 1950 & 1960, driver @ Indianapolis won point towards the F1 championship, so technically it is a F1 car!)

the problem is that f1 has effectively turned into a spec series where all cars look the same with little to no room for aerodynamic innovations

I think not, there's no question in my mind the Tyrrell 001 is the second most stunning Formula 1 car ever built, looks beautiful but purposeful and sounds gorgeous in the flesh in the way that no other DFV engined car I've ever heard does.

The Eagle just looks so damn good, no wonder why I drive it in GPL all the time

Personally I prefer these from the thirties.
Although the game was almost crap the "Spirit of Speed 1937", was a nice try. Hopefully mods in LFS will be open before 2037, and then we can create a nice recreation to commemorate the centenary .

No LFS fan can deny the flying sensation in this newer cars without aerodynamics would be also pretty amazing

See the cable going up one of the rear wing poles? I think that might be part of the mechanism for the driver to change the angle of attack on the straights. Banned today of course.

Yeah, that's what I thought. Could maybe also be used to increase yaw stability. But on that particular car I get the impression designer probably just thought it looks cool.
