I might do a very very bad photochop of it at some point, and it would look a bit more busy, but here goes.

1. LFS World messages displayed on the right of the screen.
2. News ticker at the top for new world records and similar
3. Favourite servers and buddy list shown.

Would be easy enough to set up the Master Server to load an RSS feed to display important news items, then clickable links to open a browser. Maybe not for stuff as trivial as WRs, but definitely game updates.

I'd also like to see a track filter so I can choose to show or hide servers running tracks I'm not interested in.

I was thinking mousing over it would open up that news item in LFS. My rather bad paint edit will be ready soon.

A quicky I did of how I (somewhat) pictured it.
I think important info should be as "in your face" as possible so people won't miss it, I think the main screen would be the best place for it. There could be older news items at the bottom or so which you could open like Duke suggested.

Judge the idea, not the quality of the stuff and not knowing what font LFS uses so putting it all in Arial.

Yeah you're right, but some people may ignore that. Plus I think it's a good idea to give some extra information about it so people know what's going on. Also to players who play offline a lot. Anyway, this is just an example of what could be displayed there, it could be used for anything that's of importance to the players out there.

Another idea that just popped in. Like Dajmin said, RSS feeds would be a good method for this. Team owners and league organisers could also make an RSS feed available that could be plugged in there and inform their players of important info like rescheduling of a race, event reminders, etc
A simple config file in LFS could be used to specify the RSS feeds to be listed there.

I prefere joen's idea... all we need is the latest news.
And maybe a buddy list within the game.

Other than that i think we should leave LFSW do the fine job it's doing and LFS.exe do the fine job it's doing

IIRC, I just copied and renamed the default bkg_garage.jpg file in the lfs\data\pic folder to bkg_entry.jpg although I turned the brightness down a bit. But here you go.
BTW, if you mean the LFS logo, it's not really part of the background. It's stored in some other file. Actually, I'm trying really hard to remember how I replaced that
