1997 F1 race at Jerez
I remember watching this race at 4:30am live and it was the most exciting and emotional race i've ever seen.

FINALLY i found a copy of it on a file sharing network after years of looking.

i hope Bernie doesn't mind

how many of you have seen this race?
let me give a summary for those who haven't:
- schumacher had 1 more point than villeneuve, final race of the 97 season
- 3 men tied for pole position with EXACTLY the same time to 1/1000th of a second
- sauber took team orders from ferrari (engine supplier) to slow down villeneuve in the middle of the race
- mclaren made a deal with williams to slow down schumacher in the race also
- villeneuve made an awesome pass inside schumacher at turn 1, schumi started turning in, saw villeneuve and instinctively turned away, then realised that if JV passed him he'd lose the title and turned back in HARD to villeneuves sidepod. memories of hill in 95 anyone?
- in 95 schumi stood on the track wall waiting for hill to come around again, when he didn't he showed excitement at winning the championship. (scumball?)
- in 97 he stood on the wall for lap after lap as JV kept coming around. even the comentators made a note of it. eventually he walked away. (scumbag?)
coulthard obviously lets hakkinen pass him
- villeneuve gets a radio call from his engineer "remember juaques, the mclarens have been quite helpfull"
- JV's car feels "funny" and both mclarens then pass him (on the last lap i believe) and mika takes his first win in (approximately) 100 starts

amazing. i can't wait to watch it again with my current F1 buddies

shame i havent seen it.....yet :P

saw a kind of flashback of it from utv/itv coverage, 1:21.072 for villeneuve, schumacher and frentzen. ofcourse saw schumacher trying to takeout villeneuve but just taking himself out - commentator: "that didnt work, michael. you hit the wrong part of him my friend". schumacher got disqualifyed for it and villeneuve won the title. hakkinen won his first race from villeneuve letting him past aswell...lot of action it seems

i've gotta get my hands on that race!

"I did not try to take him out, I just wanted to win the world championship. I committed an error of judgement and I will accept from the FIA whatever the consequences may be. People do not expect me to make mistakes. But from what I have seen the reaction has been exaggerated. Worse things have happened in motor races than what happened last Sunday. I saw Villeneuve after the race, we shared a bottle of beer and he asked me why I did it. I told him and he listened without bitterness." - Michael Schumacher

Over the coming weeks the German, British and Italian Press got stuck into the story and this is how MS got a bad reputation, all in the name of selling magazines and newspapers. Other drivers in F1 have also been on the receiving end of a Press bashing, though perhaps not so succsessful as MS, they are less desireable fodder for the media circus. After the Jerez incident JV was interviewed and at first he brushed the incident off as trivial, but over the coming months (the off season where there is little news but gossip and speculation) the press taunted JV and set him up nicely to get him agitated over the incident. Some ensuing interviews produced some spiteful comments about Michael from JV (he doesn't like the media and makes no secret about it, so they love to hassle him too), and the Press ran the bloody gauntlet once more.

I often wonder why Senna is never portayed as a bad guy for deliberately wiping out Prost, nor Prost for for wiping out Senna, both incidents effected their respective world championships at the time and were far more serious than the Jerez incident though the punishment was tivial in comparison. The Press love to hype up drama and they did so for MS at Jerez. This year they are putting the boot into JV (F1 Racing Magazine October 2005), check out the nasty biased British Press up to their usual evil. People love to hate people, it seems, and that sells paper.

exactly. not to mention senna punching eddie irvine after a race.
Thanks! The big one is on the way albeit slowly. There were a few smaller ones too of the equal qualifying laps and of the schumacher villeneuve incident.

Because Senna is dead, and you don't (openly) hate dead people, when Senna was still alive I remember there was indeed a lot of contraversies, especially after Suzuka when he was being scrunitized. Prost was seen as a nice gentleman that has already won it all while Senna is still quite immature and have more to prove. It took like several years for people to really get over the hype and really acknowledge Senna as a master class driver in F1's history. (and in a way protrayed his ruthless racing style as some sort of exotic and passionate character, which was kinda made romantic.)
WICKED!

it finished downloading today. i'm going to get some f1 buddies who haven't seen it over, get some beers, unhealthy foods, and play some LFS before and after watching it.
