Quote from MAGGOT :Last book I read, and the only book I ever actually liked, was 'Black Hawk Down.' Great book, better than the movie. And, it's not based on an actual event, it IS the actual event. A History book in the form of a novel. Great read

I thought the movie was pretty good, but might have to track a copy of the book down.. since I left school, I read like crazy

I probably read 2 books a month normally along the true crime genre or war related, although 2 good ones I read recently were 'Bringing Down the House' (true story of MIT kids card counting at Vegas) and 'The Bourne Ultimatum' (3rd from the Jason Bourne fictional stories).

Reading's cool and tends to get my mind off code just before I go to sleep

Regards,

Ian
Quote from JTbo :There are people that can read much faster than that and they get what book says as well as you do while you read at your own speed, well actually better

Well some can read faster than others, but usually there is some information loss, I'm very slow reader and my memory is not working at all, it is impossible for me to reach even to 50% no matter how slow I read.

Speed reading

heh. Just did a speed reading test: "Your read 144 words in 0.24 minutes. Your reading speed is 600 words per minute!"
If you want to do it too: http://www.study-habits.com/speed-reading-test.html - but be aware, you have to be honest to yourself

152 words per minute, but I need to translate text and also convert it to my sick parallel universe that differs from real world quite a bit

I have trouble reading really, I jump, I loose where I'm going etc.
I've been reading serious literature. The Lord of the Flies, by William Golding.
Quote from Bean0 :I tend to read more in the summer, sitting outside with a beer and a book is great.

Same here tbh. Haven't really had time for the last few months. Although I did force myself to buy a non-codey book last month. It was quite nice re-reading Iain M. Bank's Excession.

Quote from Ian.H :Reading's cool and tends to get my mind off code just before I go to sleep

Don't you then need something to take your mind off the book though? I usually find that I just have to keep reading and end up more tired than if I stayed up all night coding

Blimey... pretty good book, but I've seriously not touched it since I was at school

Anyone got any suggestions on good, preferably newer, scifi, fantasy or thriller novels, preferably not Pratchett though (I'm all Pratchett'ed out atm).
655 WPM on that test.

Right now I'm between authors and don't get much time to read, but I'm a huge Jules Verne fan. Dan Brown's books are also pretty good to read.
Looks like Im slow.

Your read 144 words in 0.45 minutes. Your reading speed is 320 words per minute!

Slow, SLOW?! I'm going to enter into depression and agony here with my lousy 152 words per minute

Quote from the_angry_angel :Blimey... pretty good book, but I've seriously not touched it since I was at school

We were forced to watch that movie in Religion class (catalyst to a discussion on the neccessity of rules and bounderies in society) and I can honestly say I did not like it. It wasn't just that the movie was poorly done, it was the basic story of it. I just didn't find it interesting in the least. That goes for every single book I've been forced to read in school (heh.. I never actually finished any of them; it's amazing how well you can do on a book test when you just guess the answers!).

The real problem is, these poor books put me off reading all together really. I understand that people have different tastes, but I just could not get into any of them. Off the top of my head, some of the books I had to read throughout my school years were:
-The Great Gatsby
-The Appretinceship of Duddy Kravitz
-A Handmaid's Tale
-The Giver
-Cue for Treason
-The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe (Also had to see a play of this, which was just as boring as the book. Thankfully only a couple hours, verses a couple weeks to read the book in class.)
Plus a variety of Shakespear, from Romeo and Juliet, to Macbeth, and really all of his big plays (Except A Mid Summer Night's Dream)

That's all I can recall off the top of my head. Surely these can't be the best books out there? Black Hawk Down was very provocatively written. It had a lot of emotion, whereas the ones thrust upon us in school were dead; uninteresting, un-enthusiastic and souless. They were definately not intellectual stimuli.

Ah well, I guess I just need a book about war to interest me, as sad as that may be... who knows?

Some suggestions from someone who doesn't generally like Sci Fi:

Cities of the Red Night by William Burroughs
Cosmicomics by Italo Calvino
The Third Policeman by Flann O'Brien

EDIT: though for anyone who likes it bitesize, here's my favourite Arthur C Clarke story (in full): The Nine Billion Names of God

Sorry, I meant just in comparison to most people who posted here.

As everybody knows, LFS is full of the bestest speed readers in the world!

At least I can feel bit better when racing at SO Sprint 2 with XRG, there are less people ahead than behind
I've been off reading for a while as the books for A level English are pretentious shite.

However, I got the book A Clockwork Orange with The Independent last week and it is brilliant. Well worth a read. The film is good too but misses out detail.
Does anyone know of any not-too-distant-future dystopic books? I'm looking for something with an intellectual side, while maintaining an action side. I don't want any crazy sci-fi wierdness, just a near future war book. Something possibly post-apocalyptic.

I can't think of any movies like this off the top of my head, but a game that comes to mind is right along the lines of what I'm looking for: Devastation. The game was quite fun to play; when it worked, but the setting and backstory was interesting.

If anyone knows anything please let me know and I'll check them out... I might just *gasp* read a book on my own terms!
Devastation was great, but I only ever had the demo.

Post-apocalyptic isn't my thing, it's all too generic and games/movies are better at it IMO.
For some reason, Devastation was horroibly unstable; despite being based on the Unreal game engine which is quite good.

Personally, I find a lot of interest in post-apocalyptic or other near-future dystopias. V for Vendetta, Reign of Fire, and The Island are three of my favorite movies, all of a dystopic nature (to a small extent). Reign of Fire is the only post-apocalyptic of the three, but it is a very unique apocalypse compared to most other storied
Your read 162 words in 0.37 minutes. Your reading speed is 438 words per minute!

I don't have a lot of time to read anymore, and was never a big reader other than technical material. I still read one very old book though regularly. Well, 66 books actually
Has anyone here read "Fatherland," "Alongside Night," or "Neuromancer?"

I went though the list of dystopic books on wikipedia (well, the first half) and these were the only ones which caught some interest. Worth reading?
I read alot. I could go so far as to say I consume books. Right now I am reading from this series. I strongly recommend theses books if you're a petrol head and like reading.
Oops, forgot to post the speed test result:

Quote from speed reading test :Your read 144 words in 0.25 minutes. Your reading speed is 576 words per minute!

Your read 162 words in 0.29 minutes. Your reading speed is 559 words per minute!

But in my defense, It's not my native language and I had a few pints..

I'm sure when I am sober and reading dutch, I could manage half that!!
