It honestly baffles me how people can get so many viruses and trojans so quickly. My PC has had no virus or spyware for 3 years (coincides with when the rest of the family moved to a newer one 
) and it's not for the fact it doesn't get used for shady stuff either. Every other computer in my house is full of malware, I use Avast which has been far more effective than Norton or McAfee in stopping the stuff on them but it still gets in every couple of months. On my PC I've stopped all active scanning/firewall things as they're a waste of time and occasionally scan with Avast, yet to pick anything up yet.
In short the best virus scanner is common sense.
