Moving when engine is idle ?!
Hi all. In the first versions of LFS when you put on gear the car started to move with no throttle needed, just engine runnig on idle.

With the current LFSs you put on gear but you are clutched. To start go you need to throttle. Can this option be removed and while idle no clitch to be applied.
In GTR,GTL and so on games it is called: "Auto Clutch" with check/uncheck option. Is there something like that in LFS.

Thanks a lot.
Moving when the engine is idling? You are probably parked up on a hill
on a hill id say
He disabled auto clutch and to prevent stall clutch magicaly skipping and moving car a little, while in gear
I think he's right - in the early versions of LFS the autoclutch wasn't as 'good' as now, and so the car would move (and not stall) if in gear at idle. Now the autoclutch kicks in and keeps you still.

To the OP, the clutch, transmission and stalling implementation is on Scawen's to do list, but we have no idea when we might get to try it out. It might be in the next imcompatible patch (again, we don't know when we'll see that), or 3 incompatible patches time. But it is noted and planned for improvement, and it's likely that auto-clutch=off will then properly be a manual clutch.

If you turn auto clutch off you can move when in gear when the engine is idling, you just have to clutch smoothly enough so you wouldn't stall (otherwise LFS will automagically declutch for you)

I'm hoping and praying that this is true. Improving the clutch model and implementing stalling is the second most important improvement to be made IMO. Second only to improved engine/suspension damage.

Not really sorting the diffs and modeling brakes are far far more important IMO.

I think that the diffs, while incorrect, don't deter from proper racing much at all. Ditto for the fact that brakes don't overheat (though I really hope we get that behavior eventually). Everyone is still on a level playing field in both of these cases and both are close enough to correct that the cars handle pretty realistically.

Damage and clutch are a totally different story. As it is now you can hit the wall at 60mph and continue merrily on your way. No suspension damage, no radiator damage, no engine damage. Even if you don't hit anything you can flatshift until the cows come home and downshift at ridiculous RPMs with little chance of hurting your race and no chance of a DNF. The clutch detracts from immersion and realism also. People spin or do things that should cause the car to stall, but because of the autoclutch they suffer no ill effects. Many race cars don't even use batteries, so one mistake and your race should be over since you can't restart your car. Both of these issues detract from realism and fair racing far, far more than the diffs or brakes currently do.

Again, I'd like to see the diffs fixed and brake wear/temp modeled, but I think that both of those items would have relatively little effect on most races. Improved clutch and damage models would have significant effects and greatly improve realism.
yes, but first i would like accurate damage models =/

Heres what happened to me...

1. Car flips, hits wall going about 110, keeps going perfectly fine after knocking a few tires in front of me...
2. I hit tires, going about 70 because i didnt want to hit the car that was going slow after wrecking, and i flip, and my front-left suspension is pretty much gone...

=/ I would personally like to see the damage physics fixed before the transmission is fixed. Though im going to love the day when people that drive at 10000 rpms blow their engines =) I liked that features in NASCAR RACING 2003 season.. people shift down, *poof* black smoke starts coming out, peoples windshields are getting dirty, and they are DONE... forever!....

Thats another thing.... Maybe make it that during a race they cant just return to pit, get a brand new car, and wreck it =/ Make them drive into the pits, then leave, but they cant return =) sure, people that were wrecked out are mad, but people who are bad drivers wont make everyone else suffer... besides, then they wont have unlimited cars, and they might drive safer.... ^^

This can already be done by turning off mid-race join.

Or by using insim!

That only stops people joining the session. If you pit you are still technically in the session and take up a slot (that's why it's polite to spectate if you want to sit out) and can leave the pits at any point so you can keep using shift + S
and mid race join won't notice.

I'd like an option for public servers where it does the opposite ie. you can join a server and start mid-race but cannot shift + S and have another go, punishes crashing but doesn't make clean racers wait when joining a server.

EDIT: @S14 DRIFT - wtf was the point in that post?

You are really smart...

Folks, let's stick to the subject.

Yes, you're right. I guess I haven't had much trouble with this on S2 servers so I didn't notice the workaround.

Ditto. I really like the way NetKar has implemented these ideas. I don't like the rest of the sim, but some of the "hardcore" options are very nice.

Yeah the damaged fixed sure OK (lol just don't wreck!!!) but the other thing... No way. that's what league races are for. With what your saying, one wreck can pretty much totally ruin a race for everyone and I imagine a deliberate wrecker would be in griever heaven with that new weapon for them
