Quote from jamesrowe :As of maybe, I am sure it could get back to where it was! We still have world beating industries by the way, we still have the second largest amount of world leading companies etc and so on!

But the world is changing. Parts of the world that traditionally held world power are losing their grasp on it. The countries sitting on the biggest wealth are the regions that are most unstable. Britain is becoming more and more reliable on the rest of the world for energy, probably the most important commodity in the world. World power is shifting slowly but surely.

Who was it said "The meek will inherit the earth"? lol

Is that why Britain is growing, and our economy is getting larger! Also is that why London has become the largest financial centre of the world (yes larger then NY), we are growing not failing!

You are missing my point. You need to stop thinking short term. Traditional indicators of ecomnomic success are only useful over the short term.

Oh and the reason the LSE is so successful is primarily due to the fact it is on GMT time. OK we have solid financial and legal frameworks which helps. But this is all short term stuff.

Well, maybe I don't have your grasp of macroeconomics, or maybe you don't have my grasp of reality.

Quote from jamesrowe :London has become the largest financial centre of the world (yes larger then NY)

Explain what you mean by "the largest financial centre of the world", just to show me that you know what you're talking about.
Quote from jamesrowe :Ahem, erm why was it that Britain once had one of if not the largest car manufacturer in the world? We use to lead the world in cars once! We are more than capable of doing it again!

BMC and the Rootes group never made more cars than GM, or Ford before them

But so is the Chinese economy and thats headed for disaster. Exports are unnaturally supported by an artifically low priced currency, labour shortages are pushing up manufacturing costs by 20+% a year. Companies are already looking at other ASEAN countries for sites for new manufacturing plants. And thats not to mention China's inability to throw off the shackles from its communist past (or present depending how you look at it).

China is a democracy, all be it a rather skewed one. In fact China's parliament is the largest in the world with 3000 members.

Its irrelevant though. My original point was about shifting power and that is about natural resources and not politics.
