Inserting CATIA models into an "game"
Hi all, I have yet another question for you (I ask too many)

Is it possible to insert a CATIA model into a (dare I say :bananadea) .....game.

No, I'm not attempting to create something I have no experience in. I'm just curious as to the possibilities of CATIA (if anyone has knowledge of it)

Thanks in advance...

The ever curious,
Kringle
you can't put any models into this game..
Apart from that it isn't possible to put your own models in LFS, I think CATIA models come with an added difficulty that they are parametric and not polygonal models. So they should be converted first, which would probably be pretty hard as I think the CATIA filetype isn't open to the public (I guess, but not sure).

It sure would be very cool though, it would save me some time at least

In too what "game"? LFS, no, rFactor or something like that? YES.

Not in CATIA's native file format of course, they would have to be meshed into 3DS,DXF or something like that

Oh no, I'm not stupid enough to want to put a model into LFS!

Hmm, I was just curious that was all, because I see CATIA as the premier 3D app, and to use it in a "game" would surely be a good thing.
By "game" I was visualizing "F1 Manager" by EA Sports, where they had spinning 3D models of various components.
CATIA *shivers* definatly a love hate relationship with that program.

I know nothing of games, making things for games etc, but i would expect you could. I know it is easy enough, with a few problems ofcourse, to export CATIA models into other programs like Pro Engineer and Powershape etc just by saving as .igs .iges (And other file types i can't remember off hand) but i dont know if you could save it into a a 3ds max file say. I suppose a way round it could be to to model in CATIA, export to a programs that uses polygon modelling then export it into 3ds max say.

Nothing wrong with CATIA (Unless its V4). CATIA V5 even with the most basic of modules can export out to *.stl files which I know Blender can import so I assume 3D Studio can as well.

I use CATIA V5 on a daily basis

@ robps: Coventry? Not at the university by any chance?

Not for a few years, but yes I did go to Cov Uni until 2003. I studied Engineering CAD(HND) and Engineering Design(BSc) - Is Ian Dunn still a lecturer there?

Yep, I just had a lecture with him this morning!
One of the advantage modules "Technical Presentation Skills".
I do motorsport engineering(BEng) so he doesn't teach us.
Anyone want to teach me CATIA? I'd love to be able to use it like a pro!
He was my course tutor small world sometimes
Would someone teach me how to use I-deas? If there was a program I have ever hated as much as I-deas... I thought Catia was quite easy to learn. Compared to I-deas Catias was self-explanatory, like comparing notepad versus installing linux 10 years ago... (mumble)
I hate ideas - I had to use it at uni, and in the end just did all the designs in AutoCAD, coloured them in to look like Ideas models, then inserted my drawings into screengrabs of Ideas with photoshop to fool my lecturers!!!

Don't bother with Ideas unless your job/company specifically wants you to know it - it's not widely used enough (as far as I can tell) to bother with...
We have a seat of it (IDEAS) here, along with Powershape too, both IDEAS and Powershape are big in my field, but I always tend to drop into using Rhino because it's so damn quick and easy to use.

I use I-Deas too Yes its not quite as easy to use, but that's only the interface. EDS I-Deas (formerly SDRC I-Deas) will not be worth learning in its current form, as it has been merged into Unigraphics and has been re-branded as I-Deas 'NX' and looks a whole lot more easier to use.

Come on....what's there not to love about this interface

Ford are still using I-deas and now that it's been merged with Unigraphics it's worthwhile learning even if its just to learn your way around the interface.

I'd rather do everything (including everything in 3d) with Autocad than I-deas

That is just scary. I still remember the misery with our I-deas models. The lecturers wanted the real files as well so chance of photoshopping

I have come across I-deas quite many times, and in the end the basics are quite easy to handle but it is just so cumbersome and compared to Catia you need to do everything the hard way.

We actually did a small project which had something to do with I-deas models. We spend the first week trying to convert the models into Catia with trying to keep the inner part-structures usable but we couldn't pull it off. It was painful...

Catia is self explanitory, i learnt the basics quickly and then learnt extra or ahead of my lectures to stave boredem. The only problem with CATIA i found is the errors that are in such bad english they make no sense, or are in proper english but don't make it clear what is wrong and finally errors that when you do the same thing a second time work

I guess making a comprehensible error message is like the hardest thing there is, because the input isn't what is expected and there are like thousands of reasons why it might be wrong. Also, if the program would know exactly what is wrong, it might as well fix it for you...
btw, I just love that message "The action you performed on the part is unnesessary".
