Formula V8 Challenge - Spring 2007 - Race 1

This week saw the fastest Formula V8 pilots in the Western Hemisphere strap into their rockets and get back to action as the League Of The Americas once again presents the Formula V8 Challenge for the Spring 2007 season. As with the Winter 2006 season, eight races over ten weeks is the format to decide who can claim to be a LOTA Champion as the series visits venues like Westhill International, The Historic Course at Aston, and Kyoto GP Long. Last season saw D.Seward (Tweak) and CoRe.rcpilot fight for the title with each driver earning multiple wins. D.Seward has taken a rest from the LOTA scene, which leaves the likes of CoRe.rcpilot, [BS]Wobbly, CoRe.Forbin, and independent newcomer, Racin Jason to fight it out to earn the title.
Race 1 was a return to a pleasant trend for the elite of the LOTA pilots. At nearly every race last season, the fastest of the field were turning in laps that approached, and sometimes exceeded, the World Records. Race 1 this season was no different. With two weeks from the announcement of the season start to Race 1, the LOTA drivers put in plenty of preparation time at the series' first venue, Westhill International (reverse course). The fruits of that labor bore out a new World Record lap for CoRe.Forbin, as verified by the LFS HLVC system. A blistering lap of 1:21.22 is now the standard by which all others are measured and is a testament to the skill of these talented Formula V8 drivers.
At the time of division assignment, thirty-one drivers were registered for the series. Nineteen were placed into Division A. Leading up to Thursday's race, CoRe Racing teammates Forbin, Viruz, DeadWolfBones, rcpilot and PeterLaan, and independent Racin Jason were showing the way with laps in the 1:21 range. When the time came to put in some fast laps that counted, CoRe.Forbin delivered with a 1:21.46 to take the provisional pole over the other 18 drivers in Division 1. His other CoRe teammates that ran in the 21's during the lead up to the race rounded out the Top-5. Surprisingly, Racin Jason, who was running neck-and-neck with Forbin in the practice races leading up to this race, only managed to barely break into the 1:21 range to score the provisional 6th starting spot.
The 8-lap Sprint race would serve to finalize the main event starting grid later in the evening. It didn't take long in the Sprint race to see some action. Coming out of turn one, rcpilot and Forbin were side by side. Forbin, sensing rcpilot was protecting the lead, slowed to avoid contacting the leader. The result was contact from behind that sent the World Record and provisional pole holder spinning and into the path of oncoming traffic.
When it was all done, Forbin, Viruz, and from a separate incident, PeterLaan, were all at the tail of the field. With Racin Jason and CoRe.DeadWolfBones speeding away from the field, (NASSA) Hallen and CoRe.Banshee56 fought for fourth. A front straight draft allowed Banshee56 to pass and assume the third spot. The short Sprint race would see few more position changes, with the exception of a few drivers in the Top-10 that found it difficult to stay on the tricky Westhill course. Racin Jason brought home the Sprint Race, followed by CoRe.rcpilot, CoRe.PeterLaan68, CoRe.DeadWolfBones, and (NASSA) Hallen to round out the Top-5.
The 32-lap Feature race started with Racin Jason on point, and got off in a familiar fashion, with some unintentional contact finding CoRe.Forbin right off the bat. Not letting that stop him, Forbin charged up through the field from the 13th starting spot, knowing that his closest competitors at the front of the field wouldn't be waiting for him. By the end of the first quarter of the race, Forbin had gained an amazing nine spots to get to fourth, even while enduring an off-track spin! A few laps later, Forbin would assume the third position. By that time, the leaders were far enough ahead that Forbin was unable to catch up to the leader. Racin Jason drove a flawless race, and with the exception of a couple corners after pit stops on lap 9, he led all 32 laps. Last season's championship runner up, CoRe.rcpilot, started second, but also found trouble right off the bat, and dropped from the second starting position all the way to last by lap 2. He was able to climb back a bit to finish in the seventh position. CoRe.PeterLaan68 mirrored
CoRe.Forbin's race by finding trouble early in the race, only to climb all the way back into fourth to avoid a disastrous start to the season. Racin Jason brought home the victory, with a quartet of CoRe Racing drivers, DeadWolfBones, Forbin, PeterLaan68, and Banshee56, rounded out the Top-5.
In Division B, WRXchop77 from CHOPS Racing Canada, and PJWon63 and LOTF-MARSH from Land Of The Free Racing, dominated the field in all three sessions. WRXchop77 claimed the provisional pole, followed by PJWon63 and MARSH. Turn 1 of the Sprint race held up WRXchop77's progress, sending him back to 7th, from which he would climb back up to 3rd by the end. MARSH assumed the lead in the turn 1 exchange, and held onto it until PJWon63 came calling on lap 7. These three drivers would claim the podium, and start from those positions in the Feature Race.
With the exception of MARSH, who would retire on lap 9 from mechanical problems, these drivers would go on to finish on the podium once again in the feature. [DSR] Gil climbed 3 positions to take the final podium spot. LOTF-bdshan and (NASSA) Ant completed the Top-5.

Quite a few drivers found trouble on the tricky Westhill International course. No rest for the weary, though, as the LOTA drivers head to Aston, to run on the Historic course, chocked full of tricky corners, and two mean chicanes that are sure to claim drivers who let their guards down. Round 2 cranks up this coming Thursday, February 22nd, at 21:30 EST. The public is welcome to watch all the action unfold via the InSim application, LFS Spectator.
