When you play an AVI file it needs a certain 'codec' so it can read the file and decode it so it is viewable (Breif, alot more involved) So you need to get the codec, so that file can be played properly. My advice, download VLC Media player. It is a great program to watch movies and gives much better visual quality then WMP. Downloading that should fix your problem.

fwiw, make sure you have the latest DivX codec and the AC3 sound codec and you should be good to go with most AVI's....it's all i ever install on a fresh copy of Windows.
Not wanting to start a new thread; divx AVIs lock up Windows Mediaplayer and Winamp. I've downloaded the codec multiple times but to no avail. It works for a few AVIs but most dont. I always use VNC but WMP and Winamp should work.
Off the top of my head i would think its probably a codec conflict. Have you installed quite a few codecs? or a codec pack?. I've had this kind of problem in the past, after I'd installed a codec pack, where i could only get AVI's to play in one of my player's.
As i said in my post above..on a fresh windows install all i install now is the DivX codec and the AC3 filter. I can play every AVI/WMV i've got in any player. (I know a few Anime movies use weird codecs but i dont watch that anyway ).
All i can recommend is uninstalling any codec packs you may have intalled and just having the DivX codec. ( though i remember it being a right pain trying to uninstall a load of codecs and i settled on a fresh widows install)
Because he has a problem, probably due to a codec conflict.
You dont.
What is this?..stupid question of the day? ..Its basic troubleshooting
Im not saying there's anything wrong with codec packs, but often if you install other codecs as well you can end up with a conflict. I've seen it loads of times.
Thanks for the reply Moose, you're right, codec packs are often a base of codec conflicts. I'll uninstall the K-Lite Codec pack later.
What puzzles me is, in device manager, I have only 1 divx codec so there should not be a conflict.
Now you mention it, im sure it was the K-Lite codec pack i had problems with.
I'm sure i only had 1 DivX codec as well.
The only solution for me was to start afresh. Good luck
