The online racing simulator
We all were the 1nsane generation :-D
Naah, seriously, the game wasn't fun anymore when stupid kids built badly modeled cars with a couple of 1000s hp...

Yeah, they did kill the game in some respects. What was fun was when I modded a default car so the spacebar did -10000000000, aka "nos" (god I hate it when people call N2O NOS). Pissed off so many people online

But I was more of a rock crawler then racer. So I never left second gear
Graphics wise, turn on AA and AF and it is totally tranformed.

I like the cars in the game, they look nice. It would be cool to have to real cars, but by the game not paying for lisences it saves the customer a packet, and to be honest, when racing you dont have time to look at the car beside you in detail.

The physics to need improving for crashes etc, but thats known. Bear in mind this still isnt an official release yet.
You guys just don't get it. There's no NEED to spend ANY money for licensing real cars or tracks. The community can do this itself
once/if editors become available. That way, we could have real cars and tracks, but legally, there's would be no licensing...
although i'm not familiar with the laws on this, ehem.

All that's needed is to find a way to have a quality check so only accurate cars/tracks could make it, limiting the crap and riced out Skylines.

One and the same?

Yeah, Scawen was chatting about this. He WANTS to make it moddable eventually, but he's a bit worried about the load of crap that might be made and submitted. He says he;s gonna keep an eye on rFactors modding scene to see how they get on.

I guess you could have volunteer moderators. So, for example Fonnybone is moderator of saloon cars, I am moderator of stupidly excessive realism mods, blah is moderator of drifting mods (as muich as I hate drifting, it's still a real part of the community, and probably would be the biggest mod community)... at they are volunteers, they can't complain about lack of free time to inspect mods, and as they are actually accepted by the devs (and their approvals can be seen) only the good ones get through.

If crap gets through, then the devs know who to remove from moderator status, or at least have a quiet word with them... Just as long as it didn't become a power trip for some of the moderators, which isn't unknown.

Hey, how come i get the boring part and you get all the cool stuff ?!
I partiallly agree, if it would be posible to sort bad models out then we'd only have the problem for everyone to download every model to drive with others... but this would IMO kill the whole game. I don't want to race against supras and 911s because they are REAL cars and because you can't force any modders/creaters to make their physics models to exactly fit existing lfs vehicles...

You'll have to invent new classes which would lead to people splitting e.g. into

gtp class
gtq class
nos racers
non-nos-street racers
oldtimers
prototypes....................

no man, I think it's just perfect (or near) as it is now.

again - just my personal opinion...
LOL! Don't worry, I'm not a mod, and I have no plans to become one in any areas!

And you got the boring stuff Fonny because, errr, I saw your name first and thought of boring stuff

Using my method above wouldn't limit it to only real cars, just to good work. You can create a ThrustSSC with Hyperdrive for all I care, as long as it is a quality mod and doesn't harm LFS's image (which perhaps hyperdrive would?).
Sure you'll have to download the mods to use them online, but maybe there can be an autodownloader thing like in Counterstrike Source or Unreal Tournament - that way you join the server, it downloads from some central LFS-Files esque place and then you can race.
What's wrong with hyperdrive? ie. hyperdriving

Have you any idea how annoying systems like that get?

You crack open CSS for a quick game with a mate before you goto uni (you have 30 minutes, so time for a map or two). But SLAM, you have to download so much crap before you can join the server you only get time for one round.
Yeah that is annoying, but LFS could be the first to have an option to actually download the new material or find somewhere else what doesn't need it. Then it would be the best in that aspect too

I didn't play CSS for a very long time now, but I know that there is a cvar that turns off downloading of certain (or all) items. Something like cl_download_filter (?). Gazillions of M-M-MM-MMMONSTERKILL sounds really really suck. I dunno why almost every server decides to crap up their adminmod with this poo. But then again, I don't care actually

Yes, I belive it is something like that. But if you need a map, or a model (if it's a h4x3d map), and you don't download it. Crash goes your game >: (

There are some downloads that fills your DL folder with sound files that are 1kb of nothing, so you don't have to download them. So some bright spark behind the sound mod, renamed them all.
Well, you can set the filter to "nosound" or something, so that problem would be solved
