Former Formula BMW Asia driver Ho-Pin Tung will race for the BCN Competition-team in the GP2-series, the team officially announced today. The Formula One support series will be featured in Bahrain, April 13-15, which prevents Ho-Pin Tung from competing in the Shanghai edition of the A1GP-championship at the same date. Reigning Formula 3 champion Ho-Pin Tung has never made it a secret that his ambition is to become the first ever Chinese Formula 1 racing driver. GP2 Series is the perfect launching platform for that.
‘I do deeply regret my absence in Shanghai. Ever since I had the honour to represent China in A1GP my aim was to race at the Shanghai circuit. Unfortunately this is now impossible; I had to deal with the most difficult dilemma of my life. But I am sure that everyone in China will support this important step on my way to the Formula 1 Championship,’ Ho-Pin stated.
He added: ‘I am grateful to the team principal and the staff of Team China and I am proud that I could give China the first ever podium finish in A1GP.’
Despite his regret for not being able to the defend China’s honour in A1GP Ho-Pin Tung is full of motivation to make his appearance in GP2 into a success. ‘I am very grateful to my personal sponsors who supported the important decision to join GP2. I will co-operate with the team and work hard to achieve the maximum this coming GP2 season. It will be extra difficult for me since there is no more pre season testing. This is a disadvantage for me, so I have to learn quickly and to familiarise myself with this totally different car as soon as possible. This all makes my debut in GP2 difficult and it emphasises the complexity of the decision I had to make. But I am full of confidence that I can give the team, the sponsors and the fans, particularly the millions in China, some good results in the course of the season.
