The online racing simulator
Weird problem, "other players" option?!
Since installing the W patch, I have noticed in my Players options a new option that says "other players" and has both names I use when racing.
The problem is, I can't delete these names or do anything to them, it says "cannot open file <myname>".

Then earlier when I installed the new W9 TEST patch, I wanted to backup my old LFS folders, so I tried to copy and paste them, but I couldn't because it couldn't move or delete this file in the misc folder.

Can someone tell me what this stupid file and "other players" option is...

EDIT: I can't even rename this damn file!!!!
No idea... except... maybe... possibly... can Win XP filename consist the < and > symbols?

I can't even rename the file, so I don't know if those symbals are the problem.
Also, I now can;t even use my normal name because it says "Player already exists" and I can't delete it.

Very frustrating...
Using > and < characters is not allowed in NTFS nor FAT32 filesystem. I don't know how come that LFS was able to even create files with such names. You can try deleting of the whole LFS directory after backing up necessary setups and skins. Problem is that when you cannot copy these files, you most likely weren't be able to delete them. I am afraid that the only 100% working way out is reformatting the hard drive.

:jawdrop:

I am not willing to reformat my HHD, I done that just last week!

This is what my name in LFS looks like:

As you can see the < and > symbals on LFS are different (in bold, etc) so it seems Windows can't use those symbals, so uses < instead, which has caused a whole load of problems.

I think I will email the devs about this.
Nice job on resizing those pics for everyone to see. I can't even see 1/4th of the pics to bother helping out......

Try resizing to a reasonable level next time for posting pics on the internet.

Ooops, sorry... I completely forgot to resize, they are my normal res of 1920x1200.

They have been corrected now.
I don't know if it will work, but try renaming it with DOS (well, as close you can get in XP)... go to Start > Run, open 'cmd'. Then type:
rename ^1[TC]^7>Chris<.ply blah.ply

Then if it works at least you can move/delete/whatever it.

I tried that and I get "The system cannot find the file specified."
You can use tool like Norton DiskDoctor or something similar. It might be able to find incorrect filename and correct it.

According to andy's idea, you might just switch to the directory LFS\misc and type "dir" in command prompt. You should get a list of files located there. Then you can use "del *.*" to clear the whole folder
...and if that doesn't work, try a proper DOS bootdisk or a Linux live CD

I do have Linux, and LFS is actually installed on a seperate EXT3 partition from Windows.
I am new to Linux (Ubuntu) and have tried to delete and rename the file but it says I do not have permission. It isn't just that file though, it is all files in my /home directory.

At the moment my HDD looks like this:
Windows XP MCE (17GB NTFS)
/home (60GB EXT3, both Windows and Linux can read/write to this, so this is where all my files are stored)
Ubuntu 6.10 / (12GB EXT3, this is where Ubuntu is installed)
Then the linux swap partition.

I'm not sure what's up with my file permissions in Ubuntu, but like I said above for some weird reason I can't delete, rename any files in my /home because I do not have permission. I have tried logging in as root, it made no difference.
Maybe you could help?
I think once I get the file permissions sorted on ubuntu, I should be able to delete this stupid file.
You say that Windows can READ ext3 filesystemed partition? Arey you sure about that? Windows cannot see anything other thatn FAT ot NTFS filesystem.

About that read/write permissions in Linux. Open file /etc/fstab in some text editor (nano for example) and look for a line containing info about your Linux data partition. It should look like this:

/dev/hda1 / ext3 defaults 1 1

To the "defaults" add "rw" and "user", so it will look like this

/dev/hda1 / ext3 defaults,rw,user 1 1

Save the file and type "mount -a" to the console. You need to be loged as root to do all of this.

Probably using something like this?
Can be, and can't it also be a cradle of that problem? Just imagine, LFS runs from ext3 partition which allows filenames with <,> and other chars. This partition is virtually mounted by some SW tool. Windows cannot cope with these chars, so that's most likely why the file has been created and now can't be deleted. That tool also might messed up read/write permissions in Linux...
