My house mate is a mod for it. That's about all he's said. Doesn't seem to be that many people playing it, or if they are, nobody seems to want mod help (he's not exactly busy).
No idea about the game though. Seems interesting enough from watching him do nothing.
I recommend you buy it and generate loads of support tickets to make his days go faster.
From what I've heard there's no player versus player combat. Everyone's on the same 'side' (except for some weird monster fight :-S). It's a PvE only game, probably most suited for people who are into a bit of real RPing. I hear it's a huge and massive grind though, with loads and loads of factions to gain reputation with. TBH, unless there's something specific that you can find appealing about LOTRO, you're better off waiting until Q4 and seeing what Age of Conan, Warhammer and perhaps even Darkfall (but I understand the latter could turn out to be vapourware) have to offer.
I was in the beta for a few months. It seems to be a pretty standard MMORPG though, to be honest. It borrows a lot of features from other games (which isn't really bad), but doesn't add anything new to the genre. LotR fans will love it, but someone looking for a break from WoW will find it very samey.
All MMOs these days seem to be way too easy, and this is no exception.
LotRO does have PvP fights, but the way it works is you get to control monsters in one area of the game and fight against the players that are there. In the beta, the level difference meant a huge imbalance toward the monsters. I'm not sure how well balanced it'll be, but it's there if you want it.
I absolutely LOVE LoTR, I am a self-confessed Tolkien fanboi...I have seen the films loads of times, probably know about 80% of the script by heart; I have played Battle for Middle Earth until the cows came home...
I even have a LotR calendar on my wall.
BUT!!!!
I will NOT be buying this game, as I think that after paying £35-£40 for a game, I will be fscked if they think I am going to pay ANOTHER £9.00 per month (or £84.00 per year) just to play it!!
If a game is REALLY any good and the developers expect it to last, then they charge a REASONABLE amount (say, £24.00) for the game, and then let you play online at any time for as long as you like for FREE!!
If every MMORPG released after WoW is going to be almost exactly like WoW, but just a little bit worse in some way (terrible animations in LOTRO, for example) there will be no successes for the MMO genre until WoW2.
You probably don't fully understand the concept of an MMO.
The costs of any company hosting an MMORPG are similar to that of an ISP. With continuous development and their own professional tech-support/server maintenance; 350+ servers for WoW alone. Even marketing and PR, which doesn't just end after the game has been released.
And before anyone throws Guildwars at me: It's not an MMO.
I DO...and what is more, I also fully understand the concept of RIP-OFF!
A small, reasonable charge is one thing, considering the numbers involved, but THREE TIMES the purchase price of the game just to play it for a year??
OK, I wont shove Guildwars at you, I'll shove LFS at you instead!..600+ servers catering for ALL levels of experience online 24/7, running through a central server..and overseen by ONE person.
Or if that isnt enough, have you played NeverWinter Nights recently??
Before you start yelling "But they are different!!1one1!!...
I KNOW they are different, in much the same way that a Vauxhall Nova is different from a Honda Civic.
And I would never buy a Nova
Are the servers run INDEPENDENTLY? Can you guarantee a 24/7 connection at a stable rate WITHOUT going through your OWN ISP?..NO, so you are paying a PREMIUM price for an INFERIOR service...
Next time you are chatting to ScaViEr, ask how much THEIR marketing budget is ..A GOOD game will sell WITHOUT a massive advertising budget, word of mouth is sufficient to 'spread the word' (pun intended)
Those 600+ servers aren't provided by the developer/publisher of LFS, it's a different model altogether and not directly comparable. Similarly NWN allows you to host your own servers, WoW's ToU expressly denies the end user the right to host any WoW server.
The only servers (of which there are quite a few, mind you) that exist in WoW, save bootlegged server hax, are the ones solely provided, maintained, staffed and paid for by Blizzard only. That's why comparing WoW's model to NWN or LFS is a moot point, and also why the subscriber pays through the nose.
Soo anyway, anything else you can say about it? Are there enough players online, easy to get a group, lots of grinding, are quests interesting, how common is RP, any obvious class imbalances, is it FUN?
