Logitech Z-5500 5.1 Speakers 505W RMS - THX Certified... any good?
Bit late now as have ordered it, but wondered if anyone else has it?

I have these speakers. Love them, and probably one of my most compulsive, yet rewarding buys for a Logitech product

They are great speakers, you just need to make sure you have a proper soundcard. Because it comes with a 3 jack input cord that I HIGHLY RECOMMEND your soundcard supports.

If you're wondering about performance, they sound great. Super loud bass, and I've turned them all the way up a few times, and it was insanely loud, but also that wasn't even the loudest they could go! If you keep turning the volume knob to the right after a few seconds the volume has reached its max point, it will turn on the 'boost' mode and go up 15 more notches or something like that I've never tested that, but I am sure the speakers are capable of reaching higher volume. But the max volume level you can reach without boost is PLENTY of volume anyways

Great speakers, and comes with a nice remote and LCD display. The LCD display isn't as blue as you see in the pictures, it is more of a whitish blue. That's the only thing that I was 'unhappy' about. No biggie, still some kickarse speakers
Sorry Nikimere I didn't provide a link as I was aiming the thread at owners like Tweaker

Tweaker, excellent news, thanks for that! I'll probably be using the optical cable from my soundcard, will that be ok too? I'll also be using the optical from my EggBox360 so will have to swap but no big pain really.

Quick question, how long is the cable from the Control unit to the Sub?

Thanks again!
The optical cable should be even better. I haven't tried it in optical mode (dont have that), but I am sure it is even better that way .

The cable from the control unit to the sub isn't "that" long, but it is long enough (I think it is 6ft/182cm long, though it is late now, and I can't pull it out (It might even be 4ft/121cm)) that you can put the control unit on the side of your desk, and have it reach behind to come to the sub that is either below or sitting beside your desk. Keep in mind that you do not want it right next to your computer. The way I have it now, I have my old desktop on the left side of my desk underneath, and the subwoofer away from anything it can harm on the right. It has a big magnet, and came with stickers and tags all over it warning me about the magnet and putting it near electronics. It probably isn't that bad as I made it out to be, but it's just a precaution. It also told me that I should commonly turn off the entire unit whenever I am not using to save it from surges or other power issues. The whole unit is turned off from the subwoofer with a switch. The power on the control unit is just it's "sleep mode" like any normal device. The power button is lit with a somewhat bright red LED when the power is off, and then it lights up blue when the power is on. The knob is very nice and smooth with soft notches in it for controlling the volume and settings in the menu.

The cables are nice and long for the sattellites, you shouldn't have a problem with those reaching the corners of your room.
will this system work with a stereo system aswell as computers? what connections?

Excellent, that sounds fine, I dont need it to be too long so 4ft would be plenty really.

Turning the whole unit off is fine with me, the sub will be easily accessible and I'm quite fussy about turning things off at the mains.

Sub will probably go between bed and end unit, as the bottom Drawers are full and never used.

(Please note, I RENT, and can't be arsed to decorate, hence the lovely wallpaper!! hahah)

That big-ass lcd is bigger than the wall

hehehe it was my 'split with bird so spending shit loads on a tv' present to myself

I watch all the high quality LFS movies on it!!
Quote from Robster230 :I believe it also has a 3.5mm input jack on the side of the control unit for stereos and mp3 players?

Yeah, a normal audio jack is on the right side of the unit.

On the back it is the 5.ch direct (3 plugs), and digital control with either Coax or Optical. And then there is a switch to use 6ch direct or 1-3 stereo or something. I've only used the 6ch direct, as it gives more audio options in the menu (THX and Dolby stuff). Though all I use is the 6ch Direct mode and the Dolby Movie mode (has a stronger center channel). You might find that it is pretty annoying to get the sound all working correctly in all 5 of the speakers, it took me a while to tweak it to my liking. It's got all kinds of options, but it really is also very dependent if your soundcard has a load of options too. And support for 96khz
Can't wait, arrives tomorrow so i'll do a mini review with pics

Hmm... todays the 15th....

I'm afraid that the rock Robster230 has gone deaf from his new high powered speakers.

A moment of silence for our hero's departed hearing...
Hahah apologies! since it's arrival i've worked from home Hehehe (not a coincidence!!)

Poor man delivered it on time, box was HUGE and VERY heavy which I like when I buy something expensive.

Took no time to set up, although my optical connection didn't seem output anything more than stereo so switched to the 6 channel direct.

First test was to watch the LFS movie Aspirations as that was on my desktop ready... and WOW... the sub was pounding even on the default level!

Opened up my THX/DD5.1 demo DVD and it was frankly unbelievable. I've upgraded from a packard bell 5.1 which, although ok, lacked clarity and punch too, so this is a big step up!

LFS Sounds superb (I use the CSR though) and FPS games are incredible in 5.1 hearing people sneaking up on you. Gears of war on the 360 is even better yet...

(counting the superlatives?)

Anyhoo here are some pictures

If I ever have my TV/360 in a different room to my PC, i'll probably buy another of these, it's that good.
Just thought I'd do a 5 month update since i've got a bit of spare time.

Well I'm still totally over the moon with these speakers, they're one of the best purchases I've made in my short 28 year existence.

I use this connected to my Sky HD box, XBOX 360 and of course my PC. Playing LFS the cars rumble and FPS games shake the room when grenades go off.

In short, if you're after something similar... do it! because like me, nearly 6 months later you'll still be glad you did!!!
