If you press T ingame (chat button, if you've changed it..) and hold down ctrl, you will see some colors, over the colors some text (in my case, Latin 1) and next to the text there is a arrow down, there's some more characters you can use.

I couldnt find something that's exactly like <> but there's "|>", "<|" and "/\" .. Hope that was what you meant.
