Microsoft SideWinder Precision Racing Wheel; a study
Ah, yes! I've picked up one of these from my father. I was playing with mouse so far, and to be honest, after what I've been trough to try set up the thing, I'll probably go back to it.

Here's the thing, I have the wheel, it's in very good condition, nothing is broke, pedals and wheel aren't squeaking, physically it's perfect. So I install it on my desk, plug the pedals into the wheel the wheel itself into the computer via a USB port. I turn on the computer, it detects the new hardware, successfully "installs" it, says it's ready for use, no problem so far. At that point (I discovered that later), I could have just left it like this, pop up LFS and play, the only problem being that the brake and throttle are on the same axis, hardly what you'd call playable in LFS.

Anyway, I didn't do that, I just tried to install the MS Sidewinder drivers 4.0! First thing, you have to find the thing, which takes a good 15 minutes of searching trough the sub forum of the most sub forums of the net! After downloading these, I install the thing; problem : can't access the window that would have permitted me to separate the axis.

After a while, I discovered that the wheel being a no FF, I had to download another zip file, that even if it looks the same, doesn't have the same effect at all. So I install this other driver, access separate axis function, checks it, go into LFS only to find that it created another problem. At that point, the axis were indeed separated, but they pedals didn't react as pedals anymore, just as keyboard keys (full or nothing). The wheel itself was also IMPOSSIBLE to calibrate.

And that's how far I go, I have two "working options":

1. No drivers installed, the wheel is calibrated perfectly, but the brake and throttle are on the same axis.

2. Those drivers that allow me to separate the axis, but screw up the calibration and ability to gauge power on brake and throttle axis.

This obviously doesn't happen for no reason: windows discontinued the wheel in 2003 and haven't bothered making drivers that would make it compatible with XP (and subsequently Vista). The other problem I encounter is that it seems all "work arounds" only work with the FF version of the wheel. To be honest, I think I've reach the bottom of the tank, but I'd still like to ask it here (I've been tempted to post something here all day, in fact); does anybody know anything I don't? And does anybody own a Microsoft SideWinder Precision Racing Wheel (no FF) that is currently fully working with LFS?

Thanks

P.S. I have indeed used the search function, and I know that there are already a couple of subject on this matter, but I just feel like they're either not answering anything, or only concerning the non FF version of the wheel.
Interesting... I have that same wheel sitting around so I will try to see if I can get it to work.
I know these problems... All you have to do is replace your GcKernel.sys from XP (59136 bytes) with an older version from either Windows 2000 or the SideWinder 4.0 driver package - I don't remember where I finally got it from. The size is 100276 bytes and the date is Nov 18, 1999. The older version will only allow you to use separate brake and throttle axis for the pedals.

If you backup the original file from xp it is indeed possible to change the behaviour of the wheel by unplugging, exchanging the file, and plugging it back in (in another usb port). Two little batch files that copy the files around is easy to write, one as example here and the other one as exercise:

cd %WINDIR%\system32\drivers
del GcKernel.sys
copy GcKernel-separate.sys GcKernel.sys

This of course assumes that you have two GcKernel-*.sys prepared in the system32\drivers directory and are okay with your old GcKernel.sys to be deleted. Do make a backup if you're not sure what above commands do.

I have had calibration issuses with the throttle pedal, which occasionally would behave half-binary: zero until 50% throttle, then normal behaviour up to 100% - and occasionally not falling back down to zero, but remaining at 50%, imagine that while racing
I think that I solved it by pressing down the pedal a little bit while plugging the wheel in; In my case the calibration button in the controller applet is doing no good at all... the wheel (especially the pedals) calibrate themselves - more or less. Especially if you open the controller applet, press down the pedals, but resist from clicking that button. Luckily, calibration has not been an issue for sevreal months now, so I've had no problems at all in LFS and RBR
I've used the MS FF wheel for the entire duration of my LFS time (4 years!) and it's been great. Have no experience with the non-FF one, though. :[
I have been using this wheel for many years. I'm using it now in win XP and it is working just fine, never had any problems. The wheel is kinda old so the paddles aren't 100% working and some buttons are a bit guessing...

Anyway, iirc I just installed the wheel in win98 compatible mode (teh drivers are the 4.0) and enabled the split axises on the driver tab without any problems.

Sometimes you may need to unplug and plug the pedals if the pedals aren't working like they should. For me the wheel has always been a bullet-proof system, never any software issues (the macro recorder was not working until I found that AndroidXP had found a cure for it. Never needed the macros anyway.

Maybe there is a wire loose on the pedal pots?

:wave2:

I use these drivers and it works fine.
