Secondlife is pretty interesting, I saw it on the news a few days ago but I've known about it for a while now, I looked at their website, there is some serious business that goes on in secondlife, over 2 million $ were transfered around three weeks ago according to their website.
Does anyone on here have a second life account?
Second life is quite possibly the worst piece of software to do well in the history of software. It's laggy, it has a horribly clumsy UI, lag, horribly clumsy controls, lag and it lags like hell. Did I mention unplayable lag? (I don't mean a horrible framerate here, just the horrible netcode) Besides that, it's filled with mostly pedophiles, furries and grievers.

The idea is that you can do whatever you want, like in real life. That's why there are user-made tools in the 'game' which allow you to instacrash every server in your vicinity, or at the very least piss a couple of people off beyond reason.

Actually, you forgot to mention lag, as i find the game quite laggy.....
Yea it needs a lot of work, but when you join up you get dumped onto a busy Sim its going to be laggy, the world is streaming down into your PC, its not already preloaded like other online worlds like WOW ect...

The game comes with a built in 3d building program.. obviously the UI is going to be clunky, play at US off peak times to avoid the lag, thats what I do.

believe me, if you know where to look, and give the UI some patience, you can actually have some great fun in there. thats 2 years SL exprience talking.

Some things built in there are truely amazing. and with the recent addition of Shapes uploaded from Maya.. its about to get even more amazing.

and dont get me started on the furries

Amen to that. I've met some people in world I am glad to call friends. Not been in as long as you have, but it's amazing how quickly I fit in. Yes, the UI isn't exactly the best, but I have this to say to the people who don't like it: come up with something better please, the SL viewer is open source, you know
As for the network lag. The datacentres that Linden Lab use are on the West Coast of America. This isn't exactly going to help us Europeans that are logging in from some 6,000 miles away. Average ping to a region for me is about 160ms, and I personally think SL does a damn fine job of compensating for that. I rarely have trouble moving about in world. Try saying the same for something like UT2004 is you have a ping that high.

General concensus from the people I talk to in world (a lot of them are damn good builders) is that it will take a while for sculpties to take off...Maya is too damn expensive for most, and the other software needed to create then (Wings3D, Blender) don't exactly make it easy. The whole process of creating a heightmap for it isn't worth the effort at the moment.

Hey, what's wrong with furries? Many of the friends I have made (and I myself, occasionally) are furries. I find the people who are furries are more genuine than the people who spend thousands of Lindens making a human avatar look good. Fine, they may not have human avatars, but remember, it is a human at the other end, please treat them that way

http://www.secondlife.com/

I had 2, lost the names (especially the last names)
I now have a new one...

now it says I have to do something with my credit card to get on the forums...?

I have a Geforce 5600 FX ultra...

recommended is a Geforce 5600 FX.. BUT, it doesn't run on my pc, because the drivers are outdated (AFAIK, they aren't) or they are incompatible... (yeah....)

Go LFS! =D

I tried, but I was on a Mac.
Speaking of Second Life.. there has been alot of controversy lately.

According to what I've read, a Belgian user of Second Life has been 'virtually raped' as they call it.

Other users have coded an object that could take control of the character who uses this object. The object is conceiled as an innocent object.
The Belgian user was told to use it and they then made his character do sexually explicit acts in a public place in the Second Life world.
Belgian Police forces are investigating the case.

This is getting beyond me, really. The fact that it happened isn't the surprise to me (there's some weird people online everywhere), but the fact that it's called raping.
First of all, it's a virtual thus fake world. The 'victim' wasn't in close approximity let alone being touched by the 'rapists'.

They're calling it rape because he did not want it to happen, but couldn't avoid what was happening.

Ever heard of ALT-F4?
I haven't seen it, but I imagine its a bit like a more advanced version of the old Active Worlds, yeah? That program was pretty much my first foray into the world of the internet.

I sent you a message and your account works (i think)

Hehe, Furrie avatars I dont mind, I have a library of them myself, just the um.. seedy side of that whole culture that kinda bothers me.

Yea, you need to be a "verified" resident to use them alright, no actual need to spend money though, just to provide your credit card details. though to be honest, the SL forums have been basically abandoned by the Lab at this stage. but a few really great resident run replacements have popped up to fill the void.

Oh you find me inworld under the name "Richie Waves"
I'm a Mentor in there so if anyone whos signed up needs some pointers drop me an IM
though you will find me more often zipping around in LFS from now on lol.

This sounds like someone else... *cough* who when I went to his place, he can take control of the person using scripts, and send them like 845697346958 meters high, and to get back to groud, you need to log out and back in. Not the same sort of lasting damage, but still annoying that someone can do such a thing to your character.
