There has been a video of this that someone designed quite a while ago (which I can't find) and also if you follow the patent filings, Apple filed a very very similar pattent to this about 8-10 months ago...
Microsoft, doing everyone elses ideas, now with 33% more random crashing and BSOD's.
This looks like a great opportunity to spend zillions of pounds so that companies I'm not interested in can advertise to me in new and more invasive ways.
Um, Apple are kind of taking the credit for inventing this 'multitouch' technology and are putting it first in their iPhone. Unfortunately, the videos by the people who came up with the idea have been around for ages - Apple bought it up, and Microsoft have a patent deal with Apple - so they're also running with it.
At the end of the day it's just a touch screen, but it now accepts two or more simultaneous mouse inputs to create new methods of control.
Anyone who's ever had to polish a touch screen on a public service kiosk every day already knows how much this idea wont actually catch on for home computing. However you will see this on other devices, things like the iPhone, more and more.
It's not a bad system, I guess. It's about time they came up with some new demonstration software though, i've seen that picture rotating / resizing one too many times with too many different company logo's on it now...
the guys who originally came up with the (modern iteration of the) tech had some much cooler demos which have no real world value of any kind but still looks much better http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UcKqyn-gUbY
that's is one of the coolest things i've ever seen!
i don't care if the technology is old/developed by someone else.
it's a neat way to interact with other devices and it looks cool.
i want one.
Regardless of how cool and innovative it *looks*, it's still a big, expensive gimmick.
Sure, being able to put a camera down on a table and having the picture I just took pop up on the table, which I can then drag into my phone, which is also on the table - is a fantastic demonstration. Wouldn't be so cool if I happen to have 500 pictures on said camera, and only need to take one of those out.
Personally, I also absolutely despise having to slide my fingers (which have to be perfectly clean of course) around on a table. It just feels terrible to me, and cleaning the table of finger-smudges every day - only to smudge it again as soon as it's clean...? nah.
I like how the internet teaches your brain to analyse and sort information within seconds. I just listened to the flash-movie linked by joen in the 2nd reply which started with "A new type of computer..." -> whoever wrote that has no clue -> window closed within 3 seconds of the start of the media.
Great, isn't it? Saved me enough time of sensless gibberish and pseudo-information to write this post .
And about the topic: Touchscreens are not a perfect input method. I work at the computer most of the day and using the tip of my finger to navigate (similarly to the touchpad of a laptop) for such a long time wouldn't work out well.
I agree, is anyone else not at all impressed with being able to rotate/grow a picture around on the screen? What functionality does this give me that I didn't have before?
personally i love using my fingers to operate windows on a pda but i understand that there are many who dont
plus theres the problems with having your screen flat on the desk all the time ... i mean ive done that for years back in school but an upright screen is definately much more convienient and ergonomic
maybe a nintendo ds type of setup with an upright screen and a touchscreen in your desk for wireless device manipulation and (if you dont need pressure points for your typing) an onscreen keyboard might work
i suppose having nothing but a screen (tablet type pc) as a sofa laptop to put on your angled legs while lying on the sofa would work out great
theres one thing i really dont get about windows btw ... i have two mice on my pc ... why the hell doesnt it support having 2 cursors ? i can work a mouse with my left hand just as well as i can with my right so why cant i do it simultaneously ?
looks cool hoe sony do a even better version ( or any japanese company ) at half the price like they normally do but like they say in the armtel ad " this is gonna be great !!!!?!!!?! "
