On my last computer, when I installed IE7 (and IE6 and IE5.5 using this) it went bonkers. Half the links I clicked would time out waiting for some file or other to download, pressing the Stop or Refresh buttons wouldn't do anything, the browser would just freeze until it had timed out the request for whatever file it was. I was looking forward to switching to a new computer and doing a fresh install of IE7.

I did that today, and subsequently installed IE6 and IE5.5 again with Multiple_IEs. I don't think I've got the same bug but I couldn't be sure because no pages will open in IE7! Instead, any URL I type (or any link I drag-and-drop, or any page I attempt to open using any method) in IE7 now starts up Firefox and opens the link in that instead!


Does anybody have any clue how to resolve this? IE6 and IE5.5 are working normally, it's just IE7 that has lost the plot.

yep, bannish IE for eva! get opera, or if you must firefox they have so much more to offer with so little intrusion to the rest of the system

I found a slightly retarded Windows moment once when I discovered that to install IE7 I needed service pack 2 and my version of IE6 was out of date for Windows updates. In there infinite wisdom MS had removed the IE6 update because IE7 was out so I couldn't install IE7 or SP2 because the both needed the other first :doh:

I just IE6 and IE5 on MultipleIE's on a few computers aswell as IE7 and FF and i've never had a problem....

I've obviously got Firefox, and it's my default browser. I'm installing other, more retarded browsers for testing purposes. I have no choice but to install them.

Actually, switching IE7 to be the default browser stops the "IE7 opens all links in Firefox" bug from happening and instead throws me a completely meaningless error message and a new instance of what appears to be IE7 but completely crippled and useless.

I also think IE7 perhaps isn't actually starting when I start IE7 - I think it's IE6, which then opens the broken IE7 window in response to requests.

To be honest that would be a moot point, given that the company who produces the market-leading browser - in full knowledge of its standards-compliance shortcomings - decided to integrate it with the shell of their OS and make it impossible to run multiple versions of it without third-party hacks.

Actually i never actually use IE7, i use the IETab in FF to test my IE7 stuff... maybe thats why i dont see any problems? FF is my default browser.

I've just installed IETab. Hilariously, I can't figure out whether it's showing me the page in IE6 or IE7.

I'll have to hack a CSS tester page together to find out...

IE7 renders pages, allows me to click links, but the minute I touch any browser chrome (address bar, navigation buttons, even dropping a link into the browser) it sends the request to Firefox.

Yeah that works, but Firefox is my default browser and I'd like to keep it that way. It also doesn't solve the problem of IE7's chrome functions all opening pages in Firefox.

Niki suggested IETab for Firefox, which is good enough for me. But I would like to fix IE7 too. If I can't, then fine, but I'd like to.

Yep. Presumably because I'm not using IE7's browser chrome when running it through Firefox. IE7 works fine when navigating via links in pages, it's only when I do something like drop a link into it or hit the "Home" button or something that it gives up and defers to Firefox.

Just dont use IE7... theres no need, IETab is IE7... just within FF. I've not come across any differences in the past 4 or 5 months of developing...

ive been toying aorund with opera ever since at least v5 and i cant remember a single version that didnt have middle mouse new tab as the default setting
