Need advice on pre-built system
The story is my brother is looking at buying a new computer. The problem is he doesn't bother his arse to actually check up on what is the best he can get for his money. He's the sort that will just throw his money at anything regardless of whether or not it's the best he can get...

I've now been asked by my Mum to try find out if there are better options after I found one which I thought was better value. He refuses to build a system/let anyone else build it for him to help save him some £s so it has to be a ready to go system.

This is the one he wanted with the RAM upgraded to 2gbs. Came in at about £520 I think.

This is the one I came across and feel is money better spent considering the specs are slightly higher. Also comes with a monitor that is far better than what he has at the moment.

I just want to find out from you guys what the opinions are on the two above and whether you can recommend anything better for the money.

Cheers

That doesnt actually look to bad, here are some of my thoughts:

Are they serious about that 250w psu?! Thats not a good idea at all.
The 8500GT won't be too bad for most games, but is slightly lacking as a midrange card, I'd look for a 8600GT/GTS if you can find it.

If he doesn't need a new monitor maybe put the £80 or however much its worth towards better componenets, specifically a graphics card.

RAM is fine, nice big HDD, comes with Vista home premium, and the Core 2 Duo mean I'd say that's quite a good spec fr the price. Defiantely investigate the PSU though.

edit: If his budget is £600, I've taken the first link, and changed it to 2gb ram, 500gb HDD and a 8600GT, which comes in at exactly £600. Doesnt't come with the monitor though.
I have bought 17 machines for friends and family over the past 5 years with Mesh and every one has been excellent. Customer Service has been excellent too over that time. Just so you know!
I would buy the second one if you dont want someone build the machine for you from componnents. It would be cheaper.

What I foudn suspicious is the 250W powersupply.Hopefully its only typo otherwise this machine would have serious problem now or later on with stability. While it can boot you would stress already the PSU a lot and in 3D mode the PSU would failed pretty soon. You will not have a place for later upgrades as 250W is kidna funny to see in such a machine.Definately at least 450W as the cheap one used in pre-build machines are really weak one.

Check really the PSU spec with that compnay for the second offer. As I said.Looks really better to me unless the PSU is really not 250W.I cant bealive its really 250W one. Min 350W PSU is recomended for PC machine with 8500GT.

8500GT is like a 7600GS - imo pointless, because if you need DX10, the first DX10 game is eating 8600GTS' for breakfast so their pretty useless

EDIT - Oh yeah, the topic

2nd system looks good
