MS Sidewinder FF
Hi,

I was wondering, could anyone post here a screenshot or information concerning what settings you use for your MS Sidewinder FF in LFS-Options-Controls ?

Do you change them depending from the car you race ?

Do you use DXTweak to modify the callibration ? If so, what settings ?

I've some problems, perhaps I'm totally not used in racing what a wheel (that's a plain fact) since I didn't raced for 6-7 months and before I used KB, but it is my feeling that the steering is way to sensitive. I barely have to steer in real life, while ingame the steering is already at maximum left/right. I don't want to steer completely in real life my wheel in order to steer completely ingame, but I do think it may be some less sensitiver then now.

Thanks,
GC
Nobody has this great wheel ?

Can't get it good callibrated either, if I want to drive straight, I've to steer like 30° to the left :/
I too have this wheel and would also be interested in knowing what settings other owners are using.

Giannic: If you have calibrated it in LFS and its still steering wonky, there may be something wrong with the wheel. I am only able to calibrate mine in LFS as the old crappy sidewinder software was never updated to be used with XP32/64. I use XP64 and it just works, I cant access the sidewinder controlpanel, but I have never needed to as I can always just set it up in LFS.
I have a MS Sidewinder FF, i too get the wonky steering every now and again, all i have to do is hit recalibrate axis and steer fully left then right, then its sorted.
As for settings, i'm away from my gaming pc atm so i'd have to check.
don't tweak it , adjust your driving style to suit it , i got a ms sidewinder ( none wheel ) tho it is kinda arcade style handling its eay enough mainly when drivin the fxo

Here are some screenshots from the MS controller software settings (german only) and from inside LFS.
The wheel is the MS Sidewinder FF wheel (usb)

I use these settings for all cars (sometimes I lower the Force strength from 30 to 25 for some cars)

I don't use DXTweak or other software.
I never get wonky steering or something.
The only thing I have to remember is, the MS controller software has to work before you start LFS and the wheel and must have power else the wheel doesn't really work (is not fully recognised by LFS) when you run the game

The rest is practice practice practice.
btw
When I started racing LFS demo years ago I used a MS Sidewinder FF Joystick (don't ask me why) for half a year
after that I changed back to the wheel but it took me 2 month to get really used (and to get faster) to the wheel again.

My settings are virtually the opposite to the pics in the post above.

I have my wheel set to lowest sensitivity (set to highest in pic 1 above..far to sensitive for my liking)

FF set to high in control panel

I have return to centre tension off in all games (set to high in pic 2 above.Who needs artificial forces masking what's going on?)

Wheel Turn i have on 240 (as far as i know the MSFF is only 240 degrees rotation)
Wheel turn compensation i have on 0 (feels all wrong to me with it on)

I set FF between 25 and 60 in game depending on the car.
Ok thanks everyone

@BBO: "the MS controller software has to work before you start LFS"
-> I've to open everytime first the standard settings screen from the MS Sidewinder and then open LFS, or what exactly do you mean with this?

I can conclude that the FF sensitivity settings are about personal feelings.
Another thing I notice is "Button control rate"... I've been gone for some months, and back then it was advised to set it at 6.00. Any reason why some have it still at 6.00 and other (standard) at 4.00 ?

Oh and a MS FF Sidewinder turns 270°.

Thanks again for the explanation and images

and many other posts i've seen recently

In the wiki it's the wheel version #2 (red wheel)
I got the first version of the wheel (9 years old now and still working:nod
(here's a pic from another thread http://www.lfsforum.net/attach ... tid=7744&d=1144613485 )

I tried to find out the technical specifications but didn't find any official sources/infos (except from people writing it in forums) about the wheel turn, not even in the dusted manual of the wheel but I think both versions have only 240°.
Well but you don't feel the difference when you set it to 270° or 240°.

I think I still have it on 270° because I sometimes use my DFP

I mean the Controller Software (what else ) have to run.
No you don't need to open something just let the controller software run
That thing in the picture I don't know how to say it in other words
But i think it's always running in the back so don't worry about it.

The more important part is the power of the wheel.
When I turn the power plug in after I started LFS then I got problems.
So first power to the wheel then start LFS = No problemo

Hey I've that 9 year old version too

The software starts auto when I start my pc so no problem, wheel is always connected so also has first power (at start up), before I open LFS. 240° or 270° won't matter much indeed. I've still the box and paper printed manual and looked into it, couldn't find any infos about 240° or 270°. Weird..

Thanks again, think the problems are solved... now, practice practice practice...

Hey no problem. Now you got something usefull to do
(Maybe it can keep you away from the smapporbox (aka LFS Desktop chatterbox))
Hahaha hahaha haa haahahahaaha keep me away from the smapperbox he said! Hahaha

:drink:
Got another problem. The center is messed up

If I leave the steer in the middle so I would drive straight, the car ingames steers (a bit) to the left.

If I turn my wheel then to the right more, the car ingame go's driving straight.

Now I closed LFS and on the wheel you can push FF out. I did that. If you push again that button the activate FF, the wheel go's auto standing in center position.. What I noticed is that it seems my center moved during the night from the real center a bit to the right !

Didn't recallibrated it, worked fine when I went to bed, wheel got power first, program was running, mounted wheel first, then opened LFS.

So... euhm, how ? And, how to fix it ?

Cheers,
GC

EDIT:
Now I can't go to the wheels callibrating screen anymome. When I got to configurationscreen-game controllers-and then to the "eigenschappen" (settings I believe it is in english) of my wheel it gives an error.

"There was an internal error due to low system resources. Please close this program and any other and try again. If it keeps failing, reinstal the software".

"Program isn't working anymore - windows host dll32 isn't working, please try again or ..."

Same go's for opening the delivered driver software :/

Using windows vista bussiness
Core duo 4300 @1.80 GHz 1006MB ram
Nvidea GeForce 6600 LE

The "no resources" thingy is absolete crap, I run the most demanding games at high specs like total war ect...

That's maybe the biggest problem.
The software support of the wheel was closed down by Microsoft after Win98
so we are just lucky that it works under XP (sometimes only with tricks).
I never tried it under vista. Maybe someone else can help you there.
