The online racing simulator

No racers, only drifters online
I'm really happy with the demo version of LFS. It feels incredibly realistic and I enjoy setting fast times and racing against the AI.

But online, I mostly see people sliding around and crashing into each each other.

Wasn't LFS supposed to be one of the most realistic driving simulators around? And where the purpose was to enjoy an unparalleled online racing experience? It's like buying a grand piano, then use it as firewood. I just don't understand it.

I guess only around 4% of the people online are actually racing. The rest are drifting or having a demolition derby. Is this the case with the full version as well?

If so I will forget about buying this game.

Nope. Drifting is only done on dedicated drift servers here. Deliberate wrecking is as good as non-existent on licensed servers, and if there is an incident we have a much more powerful banning then demo servers (demo can only ban per IP, while S2 can ban per license so there is no way around a ban). I won't say that racing is 100% clean here and some of the popular servers it can at times get quite a bit rough, but mostly it's very nice.

nope in s2 the difference is the exact opposite with a max of ~2 populated drift servers at all times
short answer is no.people in the demo usually arent the most friendly crowd, i havent been there for a long time, licensed racers buy it for the online racing wich is the best imo, and yes there are drift and cruise servers in s2 but they have their servers to do it, if you take a look around the leagues in this forum you will get an idea of how far this game has gone and how serious the online experience has become, can always get online and do a few 5 laps races for fun. most of the people here in the forum will praize the game and the devs and you too if you buy it
If you get S2 you'll find (hopefully) a higher standard in public servers.

Also available are Leagues like LOTA (for NA drivers) where standards are held.

Several uber-successfull servers, CTRA (soon), Redline Racing, and ConeDodgers (to name a few) put efforts into ensuring there is clean racing.

Good Luck and Don't get discouraged!

Thanks guys, I'm relieved to hear this.
Hm.

Well, the top servers on Demo are drift. Scroll down to find the race servers

About deliberate wrecking--

Don't go to the car park, and any servers with suspicious names. Actually, go to any server I am in. I have a lot of connections.

On s2, there are only a few drift servers, just dedicated ones though. Crashing is a bit more minimal since everyone is too hot-headed and a lot of the times won't give you a second chance. I literally jump whenever I crash into someone. My preparation for flaming..

I'll tell you one thing though. Demo racers are more sociable.

I hope I helped.

I agree with you there.
Tho there is many strange people and minds on the Demo servers, there also, or atleast I have had a lot of funny dialougs / dialog / HowTheHellIsItSpelled? with people there.
I`m kind of a person that likes to talk a little, and race of course, but I find it borring racing hours for hours if I don`t have anyone to talk to.
id say 75% of the servers on S2 are racing servers, the rest are cruising servers, cops and robbers, fun or drifting

id get S2 if i were you

I had exactly the same thoughts back in 2004 when I was considering my S1 license (although back then, the problem was mainly wrecking, not people sliding around willy-nilly) and IIRC, asked a similar question.

As said already, licensed servers are definitely better with the ability to permanently ban by username rather than IP address, so any well maintained server (and there's a fair few of them) won't have idiots present for very long and for the most part, people wanting to be ballet dancers in cars tend to keep away from race servers (thankfully!).

Yes you can get it with a PayPal account. And it isn't a scam, this is one of the biggest online racing games lol.
