Hit M to bring up the Material Editor. Scroll down to "Body Add skin" Click on it. The grey square next to Diffuse. Click on it. Select Bitmap. Browse to your skinfile.

I've just downloaded 3ds max 8 and when I arrive home I will upload the setup to my host. Of course if you need it yet
