Hey everyone

I'm having some sort of weird problem with the graphics of LFS. lines are going everywhere so now i cant play properly as it is quite bad heres an example:



PC specs:
AMD 64 3200
1 gb ram
geforce 6800LE 128mb
160gb maxtor HD
nothing is overclocked and cooling seems ok (5 loud fans )


Any help is appreciated.

Yeah, it's a problem with your graphics card. Probably overheating.

Niko every time someone has a graphics problem you tell them "it's overheating". Why would you say that? I've seen the results of a broken graphics card, and it looks nothing like that. There's nothing wrong with the graphics card. It simply drew what it was told to draw. Which means there is something wrong with your installation of LFS. Try downloading and installing it again.

Erm, no.

If a graphics card is overclocked too high, irrespective of temperatures it WILL artefact as it needs more power - i would show you but i just ramped up the overclock on my memory by 60 MHz and locked up my PC.

There EVERYTHING wrong with the GFX card - Re-installing LFS won't help, Doing it to the drivers might though.

Grab ATi Tool and scan for Artefacts for at least an hour and see if it comes back clean, i doubt it will.

Yep that looks like an Artifact like Jakg said..

But anyway try updating your driver or clock it down (if clocked)

If not helped gonna post some usefull programs for driver etc..

Just ran LFS again this morning and it seems to have sorted itself out :o
Also ran ati tool for 1 hour and it found no artifacts, maybe it was just windows xp getting messed up.

Could of been heat induced, but if ATi Tool ran for an hour it may not have been.

Is there any way of checking the temperature of your GPU? Like in an ATI control panel of some description? I know you can in the nVidia CP. Play LFS or what ever like you normally do and keep the temperature monitor running in the background... when you finished report back here the temperature, and then we can see whats up (maybe)

Well it hit 99c while running that ati tool thing, seems a bit high but the threshold of the graphics card is at 127c so it should be ok.

The threshold temp is set to like 135° on my card, but anything over 90° will damage it.

It IS overheating, give the heatsink a clean! it should be hitting 80, 85 tops!

And you should clean your PC inside

I agree it is too hot. Anything over 90 C is not good.

I had a problem with my gpu a month ago, my fan stopped, and the temps soared to 75C. But I just stuck a new fan on and now it doesn't even go above 50C anymore! I'm surprised cause I just tied the fan on top of the "heatsink" (in quotes because it's not really a heatsink, its just a metal plate).

Changed yer tune a bit

Dont expect to "tie" a GPU fan on and get a good result, just clean out the dust and see if it drops under 70° under load, if it doesn't take off the heatsink and put it back on using AS5 thermal paste, if it STILL doesn't run cool buy a VF-700 cooler.

that wont REALLY matter that much, if he has been playing LFS before hand and the GPU has been under load, then artifacts can appear anywhere.

And yes 90 degrees is FAR TOO HOT for it to be running at. Listen to what Jakg said. Clean the dust off.... and apply thermal paste on the top to the GPU (when heatsink is removed), and place the heatsink back on top. Should work...

Dont go straight to the fan removal - cleaning the dust might be enough.

And please dont "tie" a fan to the top, you'll get crappy contact on the GPU and it wont cool well, i'm guessing that the guy who said this has a low power GPU, but the 6800GT will barely hit 50° load with a big VF-900 fan on it.

i have a similar problem (but not with lfs) i can play lfs all night and i will not have any problems. but if i stick on ArmA or tiger woods 07 which have alot of eye candy. i get a border of artifacts one pixel thick going from the bottom left of my monitor right up to the top corner and then accross the top to the top right. i know it is a heat issue because i only see them after about 5 mins of gameplay.
10 mins with a new (unused) long paint brush and it'll be sorted

just thought i would share that with y'all.

Chances are in LFS your CPU holds you back, whereas in the other games your GPU is being 100% thrashed all the time

for sure lol. i have Arma set on low (my gpu just makes it in the required bit) and for TW07 i can set the auto graphics slider to 90% and i lose no fps. i know once i get off my ass and open the pc up and clean i, all will be well. oh and sort out my cables lol

I'm sorry to say it, but LE video cards suck! While ago, when i had Manli ATI Radeon 9600 128mb 128bit my friend bought a 9600 Pro LE and he was very happy that he has better VC than mine... but... there was a big difference between mine and his. (Hate to say this too but...) I ran NFS (MW i think) pretty nice, but his vc had similar graphic problems as those... some messed up objects, etc. And afaik LE stands for "Light Edition", in my friend's case the "light" thing about his vc was the bits - his was 64bit, while mine was 128! Recently other friend bought a nVidia VC and his was LE too, looks like he has problems too.

Are you stalking me? Yea I changed my tune cause at first he said it was not overheating, then he said that in fact it Was overheating. So yea I did change my tune. Thanks for pointing that out.

I'm not stalking you, i knew you'd think that when you attack me in one thread and then i point out your wrong in another, but to be fair thats what you get for having a go at someone for being wrong when you are as well!

It's artefacts on the card, caused by overheating - case fans mean the air getting to the cooler is nice and cool, but at the same time the fins where heat gets to on the cooler are probably being insulated by the dust, however it could also be that the cooler is making poor contact with the heat sink, and as such the card stays hot and can't transfer much heat to the heatsink

Ok guys thanks for all the advice i'm gonna clean out my PC very soon as its a bit too dusty im not gonna try reapplying the heatsink as it seems too much work for my old system, if my graphics card suddenly explodes (hopefully without taking my computer with it) then i will just by a cheap replacement. Also my LE card isnt too bad after all, its still the same 6800 core, just a bit less powerful.
