Up until this year I'd have agreed with that, but at uni my tutor for WebDev is on the W3C board and he spent the best part of the year telling us that HTML is dead and we need to stop using it, and that anyone who knows HTML is at a huge disadvantage (which strangely was only me who knew it, and being that I was at university doing WebDev I'd have assumed more people would know about it).

I still believe everyone needs to know HTML first, but I was taught that you need to know CSS, and just have an extreme basic knowledge of HTML, the sort of basic being you can do it all in a WYSIWYG editor.

I think you should learn as you mean to carry on, and that these days, as Physcoman says, is not pure HTML.

There's really no need to take shortcuts with webdesign, when done right it can flow beautifully, and work perfectly. However when done wrong its messy, often problematic, and a lot of the time drives people away from the site in question.

Do yourself a favour, spend some time learning how to code well, then you can produce something you are proud of
