Faster Internet Speeds
I got a brand new laptop today, its not high spec or anything, I have a PC for that, this is just for convienience.

I plan on getting a bigger HDD, 60GB sucks. Can it be done? I heard they cant be upgraded. Also, it says I have 54MBPS...is that fast?

Silly question, considering I want to work in IT support.

I'm tired and I have been in the car for 3 hours listening to Billy Monroe, so cut me some slack

If I'm not entirely off, hard drives can be upgraded in a laptop. Just check NewEgg for example, should find plenty of laptop drives. You MIGHT have some sort of propriatary enclosure around the drive, best to check that first. It really shouldn't be an issue.

The network speed is 'ok'. The average LAN speed is what, 100mbps? So, unless you are really pushing the network, 54 shouldn't be too much of an aggrivation, but you will certainly notice a speed difference between that and a full 100mbps network connection.
well
It might be possible to break up your computer but it's risky and you might muddle up the pieces inside it.
With the internet, surely it's fast.
Mine has the same wireless connection speed and it's pretty damn fast
WTF 8,700,000 packets?

Most laptops have a method to opening them, much like tower PCs do. Except a lot of the time it involves removing the keyboard. Your manual would be the best place to check this. If anything, google the make of the laptop with "upgrades" appended and see what results you come up with.
Well, I'm from the UK and I know we have slower speeds than you "Bigger, better" Americans

I cant notice a HUGE different, but it isnt as fast as my cabled PC.

Would I be able to accessthe internet when say, taveling in the car?

54 mpbs is fastish (for Wireless - this will not make your Internet faster), but the further away/more interference you have the less you will get - i dont think you will EVER see 54 mpbs, but seeing as most people rarely use network file sharing provided it's over the speed of your net connection you'll be fine

If there was a hot-spot nearby, then yes, but most in the UK aren't free, unless you fancy nicking peoples home connections.

Are you sure you understand what wireless is?
Internet connection...without wires

Explain it to me how it works...oh wise one

It connects to a wireless router, which is connected to the internet, the wireless lappy doesn't directly connect to the internet

If it's a WiFi reciever, you should be able to pickup 'hotspots' for service while on the road. Those spots will determine the speed of access more so than your hardware (based on network load). So, yes, you can access the net while in the car, as long as you have an open/unrestricted Wifi access point within distance of your reciever.

In home use is where you will see a speed difference between wired and wireless the most. Wired doesn't have much restraints on distance and interferance, but even then, unless you're working with HUGE files to transfer over wireless to your local LAN, you shouldn't be overly impaired by a 54mbps speed
Is it possible to use the internet while on the move, in a car for example, without stealing someone elses connection

It has to connect to an access point, and you'd need a shedload as even in optimum conditions the range is only 100 ft.
Possible or no?
To be constantly on the movie, you'd need a PCMCIA card that can connect to a wide-area WiFi network. There are a few in the states, not sure about where you are, but they have similar covereage to cellphone networks. These usually require you to signup with a data plan though, and normally they give you their own card to use as a reciever for their network.

So, yes, it is possible, but it might be pricey.

Well unless you want to work for NTL you'll need to know what you're talking about, ideally with some (relevant) qualifications to back that up, if you ever want hope of being offered employment.
Got a job interview on Wednesday after getting down to the final 6

Quote from The General Lee :Possible or no?

If you setup a MASSIVE dish, a satellite or used a router and repeaters along the road, no.

It's so wholly impractical you might as well use WAP or GPRS or whatever the latest way of getting people to spend £1 a MB is
It's okay - Tech Support lines are ONLY staffed by people who don't know about technology.

The world will be a poorer place when clever, knowledgeable people have to work in Tech Support. They are much more useful making the things that need support.

But at least it keeps the unemployment down. I guess it's better than having those people shot or something... The downside is they can still breed, which does nothing for the human gene-pool.

If you want access anywhere, General Lee, you'll need one of these. Be prepared to pay through the nose for it though.

Also... what company are you going for a job with? No offence but if you're in the final 6 with the limited amount of knowledge you have, that says a lot about the company...
Thanks for that TiJay

Its not a company, its a scool

I'm 17 and I was all set to go to college last year till they cancelled the course. They are looking for someone as a trainee, with a little experience to train up them selves. This is my best bet without going to college. The pay isnt to bad either
Good luck!
