I have been racing for a bit and I am interested in a solid beginners league to possible enter into. Any good ideas?

a beginners league sounds interesting!

me, i'v got to race some more to enter any league tough.. i only know just 2 tracks well enough to be at least competitive.
Re
Ya I'm sorta the same way.. I figure we get enough time ahead of a race to practice some it should be fun. That way noobs can kinda get a feel for racing and not mess up the more experienced drivers (though racing with them is a big help). I can get a track pretty quick to be somewhat competitive if I have never raced there before. So far I have found good races on AS National and Blackwood cause they are pretty easy.

Well, I'd be happy to setup a little beginners league if someone was willing to give me a proper hand. I've the server available, and we could propose a four race series to get things under way.

Let's keep the circuits fairly short, as they tend to be the ones people start with. How about:

1. Fern Bay Club
2. Blackwood GP
3. Aston Cadet
4. Kyoto Ring National

Any preference on cars?
#5 - AW06
that would be great and i would be willing to help you out (see profile for msn).

i think the cars should be left to the road cars as some beginners might struggle with the higher performance race cars.
I'm not totally new to LFS, but I lack experience, and I'd like to join a beginners league.

I also have some webspace and vb license for a project that never took off that could be used for a little something.

Though my time is pretty tight with the wife and the baby coming, if I know ahead of time I can work things out.

Hey i'm interested. How about adding a Kyoto Oval in the mix
GTR cars will probably be good too
Oval? Noooo

Mmm. Okay, we'll whack an oval in. Give me a few days, I'll whack up a little site.

Matt, cheers, but I've already got some space etc. Thanks anyway.

What days / times are best for people? Bearing in mind I live in London

If you need any help with anything in that department, send me a PM.

I'll see if anyone I know will be interested in joining as well.
I like this idea a lot. How about making the league quite short. You could use the 4 or 5 most popular track/car combos that new players will probably come across. After all, if it is for beginners you will not have complaints about being unoriginal. For example i would replace AS cadet with AS club. Looking at LFS desktop, club has way higher track usage and as such would seem the better choice (although i am biased on that one). For cars i would suggest the XFG for blackwood as an introduction that everyone is familiar with, then one SS, one GTR and one other popular class/model.

This should make it immediately accessible (as new players are bound to have experience with at least 1 of the cars or tracks). Even if they arent by playing through and practicing for the league they will gain a good grounding in all the most widely played areas of the game on which they can build. It should also make a great tool for learning and discussing racecraft. For example the penalty for crashing someone out may be starting a discussion thread on what went wrong, why and how to correct the problem rather than penalising points etc.

The benefit of keeping it to just a handful of races means there can be good accessibility as new players join the community, racers can move on and up without a long term commitment if they enjoy it and do well and it is not intimidating.

How will you define beginner though? Join date, laps, mileage, previous competitions?
Hi guys,

Thanks for your comments. I agree, the league indeed should be quite short. I know that certainly for me, the biggest problem with LFS was making the tires last. I can be a hugely inconsistent racer at times, making long races a pain. Shall we say ten-fifteen laps (dependent upon circuit) or so for each track? Longer than servers like Redline which offer a short, fun blast; short enough not to stretch concentration spans too far. Whack in a pitstop to mitigate tire wear, and we're there. Run the races within a month, and you keep interest, and once the series is over, racers can compete a second time around, or as you say, move on and up.

As for Aston Club - I reckon the reason there are so many miles racked up against it must be down to the ConeDodgers servers. They are always packed, and always concentrate on the same circuit (as far as I know). I think Cadet would prove to be a bit more of a challenge (undulations - gotta love'em) in the XF, and good fun to boot.

Jimmy, I completely agree that the route to take isn't a draconian one with penalties. There is a lot of pressure on newbies on some servers - no-one appreciates that 'Blug Flag - Move Over' messages that appear, least of all someone who is unfamiliar with the game itself.

I guess there is no real need for a definition - people who really are a little inexperienced in online racing, or LFS itself will be attracted to the series - anyone else is welcome to join, though I somewhat suspect that they'd rather compete in their own series

It will only be a small series (i.e. ten racers), as the last thing we need are the usual first corner pileups.

I have a server, so if we can get at least five people committed, I'll open it up for a practice session this week.
i think a beginners league would be great , ive been here a while but with my pc begin so slow you'd say i onloy started playing today :S

if you need help setting it up just ask ( i can do basic web dezign and stuff )
Hey what about the rules? (like will there be a pace car during cautions? etc)
I'm a mid pack racer most of the time so I'd really enjoy something like this.
Also, I believe the LX cars are great for competitive, non hotlap driving so I think one of the city runs should be done with them.
Good luck with this. I hope it turns into a more frequent thing.

Great idea, we should probably add the SO: Classic as the league finale

I think this line up should be good, it offers a variety of courses to run on:
1. Fern Bay Club
2. Blackwood GP
3. Aston Cadet
4. Kyoto Ring National
5. Westhill International (be good to add a fairly long course to practice endurance)
6. Kyoto Oval
7. South City Classic

Also, what about the rules? Like will there be a pace car during cautions, how large is the field, will there be a knockout qualify? etc.

What about the league name?
Okay, let's start establishing a few importants bits a pieces.

1. Fern Bay Club, 15 laps, XFG - 29th July
2. Blackwood GP, 10 laps, XFR- 5th August
3. Aston Cadet, 12 laps, XFR - 12th August
4. Kyoto Ring National, 11 laps, FXR - 19th August
5. Westhill International, FXR, 10 laps - 26th August
6. Kyoto Oval, 15 laps, GTR Class - 2nd September
7. South City Town Course, 10 laps, FOX - 9th September

Fifteen minute qualifying sessions for every race. Server open for practice sessions from the Friday before the race.

I want to keep the field small, so a ten car series is enough. If things go well for this series, then we'll extend it for the next one. I need one other person who has been racing for quite a while and who will last the entire distance to help administer the races themselves. There will be no pace car except in execptional circumstances, i.e. most of the field being wiped out in turn one. There will be no restarts either.

As for rules, I think that we should adopt the Clean Racers Club set. They are pretty basic, and common sense, and most of all, concentrate on racing. I really can't be bothered with having to use special numbers on the sides of cars etc. I'll get a full set typed up tonight or tomorrow.
Hi all,

I've been playing LFS for about 2 weeks now and this is something I'd love to be a part of. It seems like a great opportunity to learn several car/track combos without the fear of being hung out to dry by more experienced racers on the more popular servers.

I'll be free to race most evenings (UK time).

Andrew
Hi Andrew,

Welcome to LFS Sounds great. Looks like we'll have enough racers, no problem. Everyone in agreement with dates etc? Race time 8pm UK Time?
I'm going to have a quick race around tonight around 8pm London Time. Server will be called LFS Beginners '07.

Hope to see you there.

The GFC is aimed at beginners. It's not all about pace and more about care and awareness.

Having said that it is very intense with the dual car classes and you would need to be well used to using your mirrors and look left and right controls.

Sign up if you want. Only two reserves for Sunday's race and that will mean you will almost definately get a grid slot. Always been 6 or 7 no shows at each event so far.

See http://gentlefoot.com/LFS/forum/index.php
I wish I could have made it today, but sundays at that time are perfect for me.
Server is online right now. I'm going to be in it for the next thirty minutes or so if anyone fancies it. Called Summer Series '07.

Hope to see you there!
i wish id seen this sooner. very good idea, i got my s2 about a few months ago. been racing on cone doddgers server1 for a week in the fxr.
however there are some very fast guys on there and can be abit off putting finnishin 25-30 secs back.
