Not sure whether I'm skinning on this pixel number or not but what's the difference and how would I know? Thanks

2048 is twice the size as a 1024 pixel skin, and 4 times a 512 pixel skin.

Actually, a 2048 skin is 4 times the size of a 1024 skin, and 16 times a 512 skin, in pixel count. Double the resolution, quadruple the pixel count.

The way to know would be to look at how big the image is. How to look varies on what program you are using to skin with.

The difference though is the size, 1024 x 1024 is a quater of the size of 2048 x 2048 as already said. The difference in terms of skinning though is that if you start at 2048 and resize down to 1024 the quality is slightly better than skinning at 1024 in the first place.
